Marines begin their transformation the moment their boots hit those yellow footprints at the Recruit Depot. It’s a line in the sand, a threshold between who they were and who they will be asked to become. This journey mirrors a profound shift from a mindset shaped by external expectations and values towards a place where an individual becomes the author of their own beliefs and direction. In Marine Corps boot camp, this transformation is catalyzed through relentless physical training, regimented schedules, and the psychological intensity of indoctrination. Recruits are not just learning to follow orders; they are undergoing a fundamental realignment of identity and purpose. They enter with personal narratives rooted in their civilian lives and social environments—narratives often steeped in assumptions and dependencies on others’ expectations. But over twelve grueling weeks, those narratives are systematically deconstructed and rebuilt with a new set of values, commitments, and an internalized sense of discipline.

I finished TAPS this week. It's the US Navy transition program for separating and retiring servicemembers. It is obvious there is no shortage of programs to help in the transition. There are resources for everything; resume writing, interview practice, job search, federal employment, financial planning, VA program utilization, etc. The real question is how do we take advantage of all these programs while also working full-time and tending to a family. In the current manning environment we are forced to ask our command to accept the burden of our absence if we are going to participate in most of these opportunities. Wouldn't it be amazing if we dedicated a few months for every servicemember's transition to re-entering the civilian sector like we do transforming them into Sailors and Soldiers? The week also reinforced this transition is all about mentors and connections. LinkedIn is a powerful tool!

After over 22 years in the Marine Corps, I’ve officially taken the plunge and started submitting job applications for the first time in my life. It’s been an interesting ride—full of emotions I didn’t quite expect. What’s exciting: New possibilities– It feels strange but exciting to think about how I can apply all the skills I developed in the military to a whole new world. There’s a lot out there, and that’s motivating. Fresh start– There’s something energizing about the idea of starting over. The chance to grow, learn new things, and challenge myself in new ways has me looking forward to what’s next. What’s a little tough (aside from the rejections): Uncertainty– After spending over two decades in the Marines, the job market feels like uncharted territory. It’s definitely overwhelming at times, but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. Letting go– The hardest part is knowing that I’m closing a chapter on a career that’s shaped so much of who I am. But I also know it’s not an ending—it’s just the next step. At the end of the day, I’m feeling optimistic. I know the transition won’t be easy, but I’m ready to see what the next adventure holds. #TransitioningVeteran #NewBeginnings #CareerChange #VeteranJourney

What did I learn from my time as a Royal Navy Mine Clearance and Bomb Disposal Diver? This. Get on with it. No shouting and screaming. Just, its over to you. How badly do you want to be part of a unique branch? Every single day on Baby Divers course started with circuits. Listen for the magic word..."Awkward" then, 2 minutes to get in your dry suit, (The irony!) get in the water, and get going until told to stop. We now live in a world where we are told to look for excuses, for someone, or something, to blame if we fail, or things get tough, or we just do not measure up. Well not on the Hold Fast Challenges. We embrace the mindset of the CD's branch. No fuss. No excuses. Just get it done. The Royal Navy University Unit in the video did just that. They got it done. Most had never used fins before, or even worn wetsuits. Guess what? Because we told them beforehand, leave all the modern day rubbish behind. They smashed it. Focus on you. It is up to you. No one else. So you decide how much pride you have? If you want to let your Oppos down? This is what we see consistently on the Hold Fast Challenges. It is amazing. People always respond. Take away all the risk adverse, blame culture, and you have the awesome raw material of peoples self pride. You will not find a more rewarding outdoor challenge day anywhere in the UK. That is how confident I am in the Hold Fast Challenges. So listen up. Awkward. You've got 2 minutes to get in touch.... #awkward #twominutes #pride
