"Even if troops do access care through the military, almost 90% indicated they would limit what they share with mental health providers because of privacy concerns." Virtually every expert in the field agrees peer-to-peer counseling is most effective for Active Duty and Veterans. Changing the I am a warrior and I don’t need help culture is a process that will take years. Convincing a few hundred millions people that seeking behavioral or mental health support is a sign os strength and there should be no stigma will take longer. The ONLY practical solution to meet the immediate needs of Active Duty Personnel and Veterans is ANNYMOUS Peer-to-Peer counseling. https://lnkd.in/gm9e7vii

Social media often showcases everyone's "highlight" reel, focusing on successes and achievements while overlooking struggles. This disparity can leave individuals unsure of where to seek help, this is particularly challenging for veterans. In my experience in the mental health field, I've compiled a list of resources to support those in need. Life affects us all, and seeking assistance is not about being "fixed," but finding the support you require. Reach out to a veteran today – a simple call could make a life-saving difference. Give an Hour https://lnkd.in/gtbykR73 A site that helps put you in contact with a mental health provider that specifies in your needs at potentially little to no cost to you. Black Dog Institute recognises that Australia’s veterans and defence force personnel face unacceptably high rates of suicide. The recent release of the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is an important step towards change. We strongly believe that designing mental health strategies for veterans and serving members must be done in collaboration with the defence force community. May is Mental Health Awareness month. It is also Military Appreciation month. This is close to my heart as a mental health professional and a veteran. Did you know that over 30% of Iraq/Afghanistan vets suffer from mental health issues? Of that 30% only have receive any treatment at all? Asking for help is not a weakness. If you need someone, reach out. If you know someone, be the support they need to seek the help they need. #MentalHealthAwareness #MilitaryMentalHealth #Veterans

Memorial Day, a time for honoring and remembering military personnel who have died in service, can deeply impact mental health, especially for veterans and their families. The day can evoke strong emotions and memories, leading to heightened feelings of grief, sadness, and anxiety. It can also trigger post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for those who have served or lost loved ones in the military. While it is a day of remembrance, it's also an opportunity to raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by veterans and their families, and to promote support services that can help them cope with their emotional and psychological burdens. Engaging in community activities, seeking counseling, and connecting with support groups can be beneficial strategies for maintaining mental well-being during this reflective time.

The VA is an easy scape goat for the veteran mental health crisis. Could they do better? Of course. The article lays that out pretty clearly. But this issue is much larger than the VA. It starts and ends with the way our society approaches mental health. Somewhere in between you trickle in the challenges and complexities of military life and the culture therein. Then you factor in the military transition and how the civilian population values military service. Honestly, it is no wonder the VA struggles to keep pace with the mental health needs of our veterans. I don’t know that the system was ever built to manage a population that is taking their own lives at a rate of 22 veterans per day. I doubt that it ever will be. This post isn’t to give the VA a pass. It’s to remind us that we must do better as a community to support our veterans. If we’re going to hold the VA accountable, we need to do the same thing to ourselves. What have you done to support a veteran?

November is designated as National Veterans and Military Families Month. We want to recognize the unique mental health needs of veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. Veterans remain at an elevated risk for suicide, with an average of nearly 17 veterans dying by suicide every day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Military families are also deeply affected, with many struggling to find the right support as they manage the stresses and transitions that come with military life. Despite these well-known struggles, many veterans and active-duty members hesitate to seek help due to stigma and fear of backlash. At NAMI Southern Nevada, it is our goal to change this narrative by providing stigma-free resources and promoting open conversations about mental health. We want to support those who have given so much to our country and their loved ones.
