In 2023, hydropower in Nukissiorfiit spared the climate from 196,837 tons of CO2, equivalent to 2,150 transatlantic flights with Air Greenland's Tuukkaq. In South Greenland, the operation of the Qorlortorsuaq hydropower plant has been stable. Only a few planned stoppages related to the airport construction in Qaqortoq were necessary to reroute part of the transmission line. The annual production was above average at 35.5 GWh. The very wet summer in Sisimiut in 2023 led to a full reservoir and overflow at the dam. This meant that the water resource, which usually is a limiting factor, did not challenge the green supply in 2023. Production exceeded the previous record set in 2012 by 2 GWh, reaching 59.5 GWh. Also in Ilulissat, a new production record of 81.2 GWh was set in 2023. The previous year's production was 76.8 GWh. The 2023 record reflects Ilulissat's increasing activity level, partly due to Nukissiorfiit's focus on increased electrification in Ilulissat. Hydropower in Tasiilaq also achieved a record year in 2023 with production reaching 6.7 GWh. Currently, hydropower meets the town's electricity needs, but with a politically approved plan for the construction of a new hydropower plant, production is estimated to increase by 60%. Last but not least, Nuuk followed suit, breaking the production record again in 2023 with a total of 293.5 GWh. This is due to Nuuk's continued growth and Nukissiorfiit's electrification strategy, which aims to prepare Nukissiorfiit to accommodate the additional energy that will come with the expansion of Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat. Energy Director, Cicilie Senderovitz states: "Hydropower is crucial for Greenland's CO2 emissions. Without it, we would emit even more CO2 and face higher production costs. I am proud that our hydropower plants can deliver, especially in Ilulissat, where the demand for energy has never been higher. Although citizens in Sisimiut might not be happy about a rainy summer, we can take comfort in the fact that the energy delivered in the winter months is green, which is not usually the case in Sisimiut during winter. However, we are very aware that with all these new production records, there is a limit to when green energy is challenged or restricted. To continue delivering green energy in places like Nuuk, we depend on the ongoing expansion project.
