The other session concluding Day I of the #DHHSummit24 was the panel discussion with Valoree Boyer (ASL) she/her, Erika B. and Sarah Serralta on effectively triaging interpreters. Topics discussed included how the panelists’ organizations prioritize the allocation of in-person interpreters, ensuring continuous improvements with interpreter triaging and performance and how healthcare organizations can increase the number and quality of healthcare interpreters in their respective service areas. A dynamic conversation, this one really gave much-needed insight to help participants ensure their Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing patients have access to timely and effective access to care. –– Image Description: The image shows a virtual meeting with five participants, each in their own video frame. Understanding the Needs of the Deaf Community… Accessing healthcare can be challenging when communication needs are not fully understood or respected. Here’s an example shared by a member of the Deaf community: ?? "I had an email from the Gastro secretary who was annoyed that I did not answer the answer phone message she left me on my mobile phone. It turned out to be a telephone consultation that one would need to have prior to surgery. She explained that she knew I needed a BSL interpreter for my appointments, yet she wanted to 'check' if I could hear and take the call?!" — Anonymous This highlights the difficulties Deaf individuals face when navigating healthcare systems designed without their needs in mind. How can we do better? Let’s raise awareness about the importance of respecting communication preferences, like ensuring a BSL interpreter is present or offering alternative ways to communicate. We’d love to hear your experiences. What challenges have you or someone you know faced when accessing healthcare as a Deaf individual? How can services improve? Share your thoughts in the comments below! ?? https://lnkd.in/e59FZWKm #BSL #DeafAwareness #HealthcareAccessibility #InclusiveCare #InterpretingMatters #BetterCommunication

Happens more often than not. Despite giving reminders of requiring services through the chain of command…it still happens. No interpreter is requested for vital meetings. It often makes me feel disregarded or invaluable as a team member. It can even make me feel like a burden because I’m often told “it’s too much work to request.” Managers, leaders, corporate folks…you can’t staff individuals who have accessibility needs and not provide it then turn around and penalize your employee for falling through the cracks because of your ignorance. Do better.
