?? The Power of Kindness in Helping Others ?? In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in our own lives and forget the impact we can have on others. But acts of kindness, no matter how small, can create ripples of positive change. Whether it’s offering a listening ear to a friend, volunteering for a cause, or simply sharing a smile, kindness fosters a sense of community and well-being. Research shows that helping others not only benefits those we assist but also enhances our own mental and emotional health. Let’s make kindness a cornerstone of our professional and personal lives. Considering the recent flurry of political headlines, it’s understandable if you missed some of the more interesting reads on connection and community over the past few weeks. But worry not, we’ve been intentionally ignoring all things politics to ensure you get your fix of community content. Here are a few pieces that caught our eye this month: - Ellen Berry’s thought-provoking piece on the emergence of TikTok therapists encouraging young people to cut themselves off from their “toxic” families.? - Elias Crim’s essay on how Trumpism is filling a societal void for the processing of collective grief and loss. - Two recent studies on how screen time limits lead to more social activity and prosocial behavior among kids and adults.?? - A new playbook from The Brookings Institution on how community members can spur more local ownership and governance of commercial real estate. Poke around. Give the articles a read. Let us know what you think we can do better. Just please don’t call us “toxic” and cut us off ?? https://lnkd.in/eJ-EWVaP

In times when the world feels uncertain, one thing remains steadfast- the power of community. As we navigate challenges, both personal and societal, I'm continually inspired by the resilience and compassion found within our local neighborhoods. Community engagement isn't just about lending a hand- it's about fostering connections, spreading kindness, and being there for one another. And amidst the complexities of life, it serves as a beacon of hope, not only for those we serve but also for our own mental well-being. Many individuals consistently highlight the profound impact of service on their mental health. Engaging in acts of kindness promotes a sense of happiness and fulfillment. Moreover, it offers a welcome distraction from our own worries, allowing us to shift our focus outward and gain perspective. But the beauty of community service extends far beyond ourselves. It's about the ripple effect of positivity it creates—the smiles exchanged, the bonds forged, and the lives touched. Every moment spent in service and engagement is an investment in the betterment of our communities and ourselves. As someone who has seen the impact of service and engagement within our communities, I implore you to reach out to your local nonprofits, churches, and public service organizations for ways to get involved, make changes, and be the difference within your own communities for your own mental health and others. #CommunityService

"If it takes a village to raise a child, what does it take to raise a village?" ?? This is the question which struck me when I was listening to Cormac Russell in his Plenary Presentation Healthy Quality BC. We all know that "it takes a village to raise a child". And being a mum to young children myself, I quite like to joke with other mums, "But where is that village?" ?? Is it a joke or not? I grew up in a city, where there are vague boundaries, so the community feeling almost doesn't exist. ??? Neighbours don't know each other. Children belong to their families (ideally) and to official institutions (school, clubs) but not so much to organic wider communities. I had a happy childhood nonetheless, but that feeling of community support, care and belonging was lacking. In the last 10 years, I had the privilege of living in 3 different smaller communities. ??? It took me a while to warm up and now I can't overestimate the benefits of belonging to a community. ?? Coping with social isolation and anxiety, compassion, self-actualisation, strong personal connections - these aspects of mental health benefit so much from that sense of belonging. It might be a village or not. But raising a healthy minded community would be beneficial for young and old, for the healthy and the sick, for the successful as well as those who are struggling. And when a community becomes a reference group for a child, young person or an adult, it will improve the mental health of individuals as well as society. ?? What does it take to raise 'a village' in your opinion? ?? #ittakesavillage #healthycommunity #compassion #empathy #community #connections #rooting #support #mentalhealth #wellbeing #society

Time to celebrate all the amazing young people and adults who who helped Rhiannon and I share the weight on our shoulders in Brighton over the weekend (all 37 of them). ?????? So proud of her and I am so grateful to each and every person that offered to help us… especially the young ones who helped Rhiannon carry her bag of worries ??. They made the day so special for her and showed that no matter how old we are, we can be there for each other. It doesn’t matter where I go or how many times I ask for help to share the weight on my shoulders, each event, each moment and each conversation means so much. ?? I hope these little videos show that sharing the weight we carry on our shoulders doesn’t make us weak or a burden. It makes us human, it brings us together and the more we share our weight, the more we give permission for others to share theirs. Please don’t forget if you are stuggling with the weight of the world on your shoulders, Samaritans are there for you 24/7 on 116123 The journey to ask a million people to share the weight on my shoulders continues one conversation, one hug and one km at a time. ?? Together we share the weight ?? Together we crush the stigma ?? #sharetheweight #crushthestigma #mentalhealth #askforhelp #suicideprevention #mensmentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth

As we go into Thanksgiving week, where many of us choose to spend times with our families, it's important that we think about families in all the ways that they exist. Did your grandparent raise you for a part of your childhood? Lots of grandparents do. Did you have aunties who played a central role in raising you? Last week, Generations United released their #2023Grandfamilies report, "Building Resilience: Supporting Grandfamilies' Mental Health and Wellness." Grandfamilies are families where people other than parents, such as grandparents, other relatives, or close family friends are the primary people raising children at home. This type of family is common with over 2.4 million children living in grandfamilies. And in many diverse communities like mine, relatives and family members play a central role in how children are raised in communities. Unfortunately, for a lot of families in this country, our systems do not recognize them as they exist. Many grandfamilies -- and those of other make ups -- aren't getting access to the resources that they need to raise healthy, thriving children. Read the report to learn more about the latest findings, current data, and even recommendations for ways we can better support grandfamilies.? And as you enter this Thanksgiving, perhaps think about what we might be able to do to help each and every family live vibrant and healthy lives, including those you call your own. https://lnkd.in/gcv39sC8 #nationalfamilycaregiversmonth #WeAreFamily #CaregiversCreateTheSocialFabric
