Everyone's favorite complaint is "THAT TRAILER SHOWED THE WHOLE MOVIE". 'How much is too much' is the treacherous line we all walk when editing. Trying to create a spot to convince moviegoers to get their butts into the theater seats, while still giving them only a sliver as to what the movie is about. This spot for Red 2 is a great example of how easily that line can be crossed, and the reasons why it sometimes happens. I was a Jr editor and mostly just focused on treading water at this point, so all I cared about was making my bosses happy, and in turn hopefully our clients as well. RED 2 SPOILER ALERT.... A key plot twist is that in the end of the movie Anthony Hopkins character is revealed to be that bad guy after initially looking like a genius who could help the "Red Crew" (this is a bad synopsis but I honestly haven't watched a frame of the movie since this spot finished so I'm a little rusty ??). This spot was made to see if we could push the envelope and actually reveal this twist in a TV spot to up the testing numbers. Well it worked. It was the highest testing spot for that TV campaign, because unfortunately spots that give away the entire plot of a movie USUALLY test really high. ?? This spot then finished but I don't think they ever aired it anywhere as I'm sure the filmmakers and others involved would have SERIOUS reservations about spoiling the act 3 plot twist in a tv spot. Maybe it was a "pull in case of emergency" spot so if the movie's tracking numbers were REALLY bad they could just air it in a last ditch effort to get traction. Either way I didn't care because it was a :30 second finish and I got to put it on my reel ?? https://vimeo.com/90262241

https://lnkd.in/eBWCGkhN I've become fascinated recently with listening to people like Jason Ruddy here on LI debate when the major Hollywood studios started to shift from the mid-budget drama (which not only made up the majority of theatrical releases year-round, but helped elevate future lead actors) to the big-budget, fantasy franchise formula! ???????? You could argue that there was really a pull factor than a push factor - just before the massive box-office successes of LOTR, Harry Potter and the MCU (helped with the advancements in CGI, as well as the maturing sci-fi/fantasy fanbase), The Sopranos debuted on HBO, which in 2013 the Writers Guild of America named the best-written TV series of all-time, and up to that point, HBO was known largely for their uncensored film broadcasts, comedy specials and boxing matches (no commercials, so full creative freedom)! ?????? In a BBC documentary from 2013, you hear two screenwriters more-or-less say that once they saw the success of serialised dramas on cable channels led by HBO (which newcomers could catch up on DVD boxsets ??), then why would you want to go back to writing deep stories with complex characters within JUST three hours (like The Godfather I & II)? ???? After all, we spend MORE time with these characters on TV (and yet newspaper critics seem to be more interested in talking about Disney and Pixar than Looney Tunes or SpongeBob)! ?? It's the increase in investment of big-budget franchise films like the MCU, especially after the 2008 economic crash, that pushed even more of those screenwriters to write for TV than for film (Paramount made The Godfather, but would soon make Transformers, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick) - corporate greed! ?????? #screenwriting #characterwriting #storytelling

Audio Engineers are truly the Best! ?? I may be dating myself here, but when they give me nuggets, I feast on them. It's like the old commercial from the 70's & 80's that says "When EF Hutton Talks, People Listen". Here are a few pieces of advice I received from one when I first started in the business: 1. Have your studio evaluated by a professional to ensure you are up to standard because you only get one chance to impress the buyer. 2. Send your audio raw because your studio is also being auditioned. What's a piece of advice you have received in your voice-over career that you cherish? Share in the comments below! #AudioEngineers #VoiceOverTips #StudioQuality #VoiceActing #IndustryStandards ???

Excellent article on the larger state of "the biz". The article mainly focuses on writers, but many of the problems and trends it describes affect everyone in TV/film. One thing not covered here is how much things like TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch have taken over the role of providing entertainment to the public that may formerly have been the role of TV. All of these provide niche content in a way TV/streamers could never do. It feels to me like there's been a deeper shift in culture writ large about what we consider entertainment. The mediums of today have trained people to have shorter attention spans overall when it comes to media, and thus step away from the traditional models of ongoing stories. https://lnkd.in/gArYuAtq
