Let’s hope sensible heads prevail over this. We don’t need to host the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games. The government must be firm on this. Why waste public funds when the money can be used effectively elsewhere to help Malaysians overcome their present financial difficulties? Further the nation’s economy is not exactly booming. Do we have that much of extra money to host this game? So why add to the ballooning national debt? After all the government says it will be prudent. Well, stick to that promise. Remember that the original host, Victoria has pulled out after realising that organising the games is just too expensive and will leave a huge hole in its economy. Also remember that the Birmingham city council is in financial ruins after hosting the last Commonwealth Games. And finally, are our athletes truly ready to perform beyond expectations on home soil in just two years’ time? I think not. So it’s best we just stay away from hosting the next edition and start doing something more productive that will benefit the people. p/s: One final thought, is the Commonwealth Games still relevant?
