Realizing this was a defining moment in my early career. It took me some time to decide that I didn’t have to be or become something other than who I was to succeed. My competency and skills were enough. For many of us, society sends the opposite message—that our value is tied to how we appear, rather than what we bring to the table. This is obviously the wrong message to send to individuals, and it's certainly an ineffective business strategy. Thankfully, we have made progress in addressing equity in the workplace, and yet, many businesses are still lagging behind on the opportunity and value of an equity-first culture. A citizen's power lies in how they choose to vote. Similarly, an employee's power lies in where they choose to work. We're seeing many employees exercise this power, and prioritize the values their company holds in their job search. Employees deserve workplaces where they are accepted for who they are and rewarded based on their skill and competency. #CareerGrowth #TalentAcquisition #Belonging

Are you practicing safe Equity? In employment, Equality and Equity are not synonyms but they do have to do with the way people are treated. Equality levels the playing field for all applicants or employees, whereas Equity recognizes that each employee or applicant is unique in their accommodation needs. Here are some obvious examples of Equity. Does building access, and furniture, accommodate wheelchairs? Is our working environment conducive for employees who experience S.A.D. or have fragrance sensitivities? These are corrections to obvious disadvantages, but here are some less obvious 'Equity' interpretations that some companies practice. Skills-based hiring, recognizing that not having a higher education shouldn't exclude a person from a job or role. Empowering your employees by providing ready access to training and resources to encourage improvement. Creating a Feedback Culture can increase confidence, productivity, and trust in people. Finally, remembering to re-evaluate Equity practices. Measure them through demographic and pay equity analysis is great but what about the tried and true 'Employee Satisfaction Survey'. Although gathering this data is significant, acting on it shows your commitment to Equity.
