Here are a few more reasons to hire a former journalist: *We can quickly assimilate information and repackage it in a compelling way for a wide-ranging audience. *We collaborate well and work independently with minimal supervision. *We know how to talk to people and build trusting relationships. I'll add another layer to this clip by Hannah Davis that I've experienced: a bystander, such as a camera operator, PR person, or spectator, trying to get your attention as well.

????That part. The amount of times I had to literally make something out of nothing in mere seconds, all without breaking a sweat... in front of millions. And my mistakes? Well, those aired in front of millions, too. My time in television sharpened so many valuable skills that allow me to thrive both in life and in my new career now. Improvisation. Humility. Learning to fail gracefully. Conflict resolution. Critical thinking. Versatility. Creativity. Effective communication. Adaptability. Inquisitiveness. Intellectual curiosity. Situational awareness. Tenacity. Grit. The ability to overcome adversity. Receiving and responding to feedback and criticism with compassion. The list goes on and on. There is no better teacher than a newsroom. If you’re looking for candidates that will make good assets in quite literally any environment, someone with Television experience on their resume is an excellent place to start.

Let’s give a little more respect to the assignment desk and the assignment desk editors who captain the ship everyday. For those who don’t know, the assignment desk is the unseen heart of the newsroom. All information — story ideas and assignments, crews, vehicles, keys, and logistics, scanners, emails, breaking news — come into — and flow through — the assignment desk every second of the day. It’s the first offense for updates and info for producers and reporters, and the first line of defense for viewer feedback, complaints, and suggestions. As a college freshman, it’s where I landed my first internship at FOX10 Phoenix. It’s a job I said I’d NEVER want to do. That was until ABC15 Arizona led the way to merge the assignment desk and digital producer roles into one hybrid role — the Real-Time Desk we branded it. Now, it’s a job and a skill I am grateful to have *had to learn. And one that I’ve used now in every step of my career — from a real-time editor to a digital content producer to a digital leader and manager in top markets. I now know how to find court records quickly, how to file police reports and public records requests, how to search federal records, and how to contact and build rapport with PIOs without hesitation. And it teaches you to manage multiple projects and assignments from multiple people — often at the same time — with as much calmness as a passionate newsroom allows. Pictured at the desk is one of our newest assignment editor rock stars at FOX 35 Orlando, WOFL-TV, Karan Deardorff, who spent decades as a TV photojournalist before bringing her skills inside the newsroom. We also have Caitlin Meade (manager), Tom Sweeney, and Leeann Figueroa (a recent UCF grad)! It’s also admittedly a tough position to fill across newsrooms. It’s a demanding job, no question about it. But, it’s also the job that often helps fill the newscast’s “A Block” each night. Tip of the day: If you’re trying to get media coverage, there are two secret times during the day you need to know. ?? They happen *twice a day* on weekdays in almost every newsroom. It’s when you’ll have your best shot to get a pitch to a news outlet either ? or ??. They’re the daily news meetings. And they happen like clockwork. ?? When reporters, editors, producers, assignment editors, managers, photographers, digital media staff, interns and other newsroom staff gather to decide what will be in the newspaper, the newscasts, and the homepage. You want your pitch to be mentioned in those meetings. ?? Generally, they start between: ?? *9a-10a* for dayside shift ?? *1:30p-2:30p* for nightside shift So, if you want to be considered for that day’s news coverage, you need to get your pitches sent in time for those meetings. Of course, there are exceptions. And this is where building relationships with journalists is key. Now you know the secret times of the M-F news meetings. It has been extremely hot and it’s only going to get hotter.?? Every time I experience these temperatures, I'm reminded of my humble beginnings in Yuma, AZ. I was a young and eager reporter when I started my career as an anchor and multimedia journalist, aka MMJ. I would run around all day in temperatures above 110°, carrying 40 to 50 pounds of equipment, conducting interviews, editing, and producing my own stories. Then somehow, I had to pull it all together to present my story live for the 5 and 6 o'clock newscast.???? It was exhausting. In this photo, I'm smiling, but there were so many conflicting thoughts running through my head, including, "Will I make it through the summer?" and "What the hell have I done with my life? How did I end up here?" True story: the bottom of my shoes would melt whenever I would stand outside for a long time. RIP to many pairs of shoes that were lost during my time in Yuma. Thankfully, I survived two brutal summers in Arizona, only to find myself heading to McAllen, Texas, which had a different kind of heat. But that's a story for another day.?????? You accepted a bad deal, probably because you were desperate for money. Nobody is excellent at writing AND filming AND editing. You haven't specialized in anything so you're going to get used as a "Jack of all trades". People have to recognize that they're desperate. You are in the wrong business. If somebody wants you to PRODUCE and FILM and EDIT, that means they're too cheap to hire A PRODUCER, A VIDEOGRAPHER, and AN EDITOR! That means THEY are in the wrong business. Stop making deals with broke people who are trying to build their businesses off of your back. - How much would it cost them to hire a Producer? - How much would it cost them to hire a Videographer? - How much would it cost them to hire an Editor? - How much would it cost them to purchase your equipment? - How much would it cost them to move you from place to place? I've been picked up by Company Cars that I had to sign the receipt for (of course the Company paid for it! ??) where it was $120 to pick me up from my location and drive me to the client location... IN ONE DIRECTION!!! ????♂? When I used to 9-5, I knew a guy who lived in Philadelphia and commuted every weekday morning to Manhattan ?????? FOR TWO HOURS ONE WAY!!!!! ???? Think about that. ?? He was traveling FOUR HOURS PER DAY for an EIGHT HOUR JOB!!! If you set up your deal improperly, that's YOUR FAULT and YOUR PROBLEM! ?? If you agreed to do something without knowing whether you could do it or not, you might have dug yourself into a hole that you can't get out of.

Does your #story #pitch have a human connection? I recently provided #mediaconsulting services to a municipality that wanted to get #news #coverage for its new branding. I asked them why a reporter would be interested in their story. The reps shared with me the nuts and bolts and stats but failed to humanize the story (boring). To make your #story standout, share it from a human-interest standpoint. Let the reporter (public) know how the story will impact them. Finding a way to connect with the audience on a personal level makes for a more interesting story and will grab the attention of assignments editors, news directors and reporters. ?What does it look like for a video editor to be a great?STORYTELLER? I've been writing these daily posts for over a week now about what it?looks like for an editor to be great at various aspects of the job. I've saved storytelling for last this week because I think it's a pretty obvious topic. Some people may say that editors are just "button pushers." But those people are embarrassing themselves.??? ? Here are a few things editors should know in order to be a great storyteller: ? Understanding arcs ?? What happened before this moment and what comes next? These are not just questions?for the?showrunner to ask. Having a clear handle on the story we're all trying to tell is essential. A good editor understands the scene arc. But a GREAT editor has a handle on the episode arc, the act arcs, the scene arc, the character arcs, and hopefully a general idea of the season arc. ? What are the stakes? ? Stories without stakes are boring. Adding tension and conflict that makes sense (and doesn't feel fake or forced) and ultimately resolving it, is the key to a great story. ? Excellent pacing ??♀? Great stories have ups and downs, fast moments and slow moments. Knowing when, where and how to pace the story can make or break moments like landing a joke, selling an idea, or living in the inner turmoil of a character. Pacing is a key tool in an editor's toolbox. ?? ? Being a creative collaborator ? The main goal of the television editor is to help the vision of the showrunner and EP's come alive! But that doesn't mean we don't have creative cups to fill. We can and should make creative story choices in the edit that align with the showrunner's vision. Being a creative collaborator?with your producers prevents burnout and allows an editor to feel like they're a valued member of the team. ??♀? One of my favorite personal examples of this was when I was supposed to cut this serious scene for a show. As I watched the string out, I thought the reactions of one of the characters was HILARIOUS. I thought to myself... I wonder how this scene would be as a FUNNY scene? So I gave it a try! The Supervising Story Producer laughed so hard watching it down and couldn't believe I was able to squeeze comedy out of the content. We ended up sending it to the network and they essentially said, "I want all the scenes to be more like that."
