This #BlackHistoryMonth, #ForritCU would like to help honor the past and uplift the voices that shape our community. The Albina District in Portland, Oregon, has a significant history as the cultural and economic heart of the city's Black community, especially from the early 20th century through the mid-1900s. Initially a diverse, working-class area, Albina became predominantly Black as a result of redlining and other discriminatory housing policies that restricted where Black people could live. The neighborhood thrived culturally, becoming a hub for jazz music and Black-owned businesses, despite systemic challenges. However, starting in the 1950s, urban renewal projects, including the construction of the Interstate 5 freeway and the expansion of the Legacy Emanuel Hospital, led to widespread displacement and the demolition of many homes and businesses. This profoundly altered the fabric of the community and its demographics. Today, Albina's history is a poignant reminder of resilience in the face of adversity and the ongoing struggle against gentrification and displacement in America. Paul Knauls, celebrated as the "Mayor of Northeast Portland," made an indelible mark on the city through his ownership of the iconic Cotton Club. Black History Month is here, and the Guelph Black Heritage Society and The Kween Company will end the month with Black Vacation Week - a time for rest and connection. "Recognizing the depth of planning events, hosting and the amount of work that is done over BHM, it is often that Black people do not get the time off or time needed to connect with their community," reads a post from The Kween Company last February. Why It Matters:

Today is the first day of Kwanzaa. For the next 7 days we will highlight each principle of Community Development. On Friday December 29th at 6pm RESPECT The Haven Community Development Corporation will host the 4th night of Kwanzaa- Cooperative Economics- at our office in the Historic Southland Mall Come out and celebrate Black family, community and culture with us. I was recently asked these 2 questions about the Kwanzaa celebrations in Whitehaven this season. 1) The fact that 4 Kwanzaa programs are held in the same immediate area (Whitehaven) this season speaks to what or is a reflection of what? "The fact that 4 Kwanzaa programs are held in the same immediate area (Whitehaven) this season speaks to Whitehaven being a predominantly African-American community that seeks to preserve and celebrate our African culture. In addition to Whitehaven being a 95 percent African-American community. We're also the home of 1300 West African families." 2) Why is RESPECT The Haven opening its doors up to host a Kwanzaa program this season? "RESPECT The Haven is opening its doors up to host a Kwanzaa program because it's a celebration of black family, community and culture. Something RESPECT The Haven celebrates everyday through our RESPECT Black Culture Social Development Initiative. Social and Cultural Development is one of our 4 Pillars of Community Development and the 7 Principles of Kwanzaa are key principles in building a strong Black community such as Whitehaven." #RESPECTTheHaven #RESPECTBlackCulture #SocialDevelopment

As we reflect on Black History Month and the journey toward health equity, achieving this goal requires a collective effort. At Health & Medicine, we are committed to a multi-tiered approach that includes policy and advocacy, community engagement and building power together, improving access to quality healthcare, and focused research on health inequities. Addressing the systemic barriers that contribute to health inequities is not just the responsibility of healthcare providers and policymakers; it is a call to action for all of us. By advocating for policies that address the root causes of these inequities — such as racism and class inequity — engaging with and bolstering the power of communities and supporting research and data collection, we can make strides toward a healthier, more equitable future. This Black History Month, let us not only celebrate the achievements of Black Americans but also commit to the ongoing work of addressing health inequities. February 1st also happens to be my birthday, and February 3rd is the official anniversary of Clemons Education Consulting LLC. We’ve come a long way since this time last year, and I’m grateful! Despite Atlanta’s reputation as a burgeoning mecca for upwardly mobile African Americans, there is a great disparity in the value of Black-owned and White-owned business. In Atlanta, white-owned companies generate 10 times the revenue of black-owned companies and eight times the revenue of Latino companies.
