Since 2023, Merge has successfully placed over 125 members of underserved communities into meaningful career opportunities. This includes transitional age foster youth, young adults transitioning from recovery, individuals reentering society, and parents returning to the workforce after caring for a sick child. The barriers these individuals face can be overwhelming and confusing. To address this, Merge, along with several charity partners, has stepped in to bridge the gap, connecting them with companies eager to make a positive impact. ? I recently ran a survey to find out what you would like to see shared on LinkedIn. Two responses came back – tips and tricks, as well as case studies. On Tuesdays, I’m going to be sharing tips and tricks, and on Thursdays, I would like to bring some stories, both from my own experience, and from the not-for-profit and tech sectors. This week, a tale about my first job in the not-for-profit sector... After graduating from university in the UK, my first job was writing reports for a private prison company (that’s a story for another day). Outside of work, I started to feel frustrated about all the waste food thrown away by supermarkets and started to express my annoyance to my partner.?After getting sick of me going on (and on and on), he suggested I contact one of the supermarkets and find out more. So very nervously, I made that phone call. And I was shocked by what they had to say! ?I found out that they donated to Fareshare, an organisation which collects excess food from supermarkets and delivers it to local charities, such as shelters. I was really impressed by this initiative, so I ended up volunteering every week for a couple of years. And that volunteer experience helped me get my first job at an organisation working to end homelessness in London. I learnt a couple of lessons from this experience, which have stayed with me throughout my career: 1)?Sometimes we expect the worst, but things may not be as bad as we think; this is the natural human negativity bias, and it’s good to be aware of it. 2) When I feel passionately about something wrong, I like to think about ways I could help, rather than wait for someone else to improve or fix things. Creativity matters. It enables us to find new solutions to problems and will help those children who grow up to do jobs that don't exist yet adapt and thrive. But for creativity to flourish, we need encouragement and the freedom to explore ideas and try new things.?Not everyone has this. No volunteers. Ever. Period. Volunteerism often exploits the time and effort of historically underfunded communities, convincing them to devalue their labor. Not here. Everyone gets paid. Everyone’s time matters. We’re about equity and respect, not charity disguised as progress. ? ?? No empty awards. I refuse to create trophies to hand out for “strategic networking” to people who don’t know us, our work, or our impact. Recognition here is real. If you earn it, you’ll feel it because you’ve truly invested in this mission. ? ? No wasted time. I won’t show up everywhere just to be seen. My time, energy, and focus are too valuable to scatter for the sake of appearances. This isn’t a game—it’s my life, and I’ll protect it by being strategic and intentional. ? ?? Yes to building a team of warriors. Therxe will be wins, losses, tears, and triumphs, but through it all, we’ll keep pushing forward. Growth and innovation are born from the struggle, and I will lift up the kind of team that thrives in the fire. ? ? We are who we’ve been waiting for. There’s no magic solution, no overnight success. ?? Twannetta’s Thursday Thought?? Starting the New Year off believing in the reach you have is imperative. While you will not always know the impact you have on others, there are times when it becomes more apparent. Instant feedback is similar to instant gratification-we generally want to know if we made the cut right away. The electricity created in our hearts and brains when we hear that we did something well generates the same surge of emotions when we receive an adverse reaction. Negative feedback can help you level up while positive feedback can keep you motivated and inspired. A few months ago I posted a volunteer opportunity here on LinkedIn for one of my favorite nonprofit organizations Braven. While I had not immediately received any responses to the coaching opportunities I felt compelled to share it again. Guess what happened next…a fellow connection here on LinkedIn, Reena Washington, MBA, CPCC took me up on my offer and applied for a volunteer opportunity (she is so excited and appreciative and so am I ??) She was accepted! Keep posting and sharing your knowledge. Keep promoting ideas. You never know who needs your words. The reach I have here did just what it was supposed to do.
