Formation mockup for an upcoming commissioned oil painting to be titled, “The Flatleys ~ A Family Legacy of Naval Aviation.” Famous WWII aviator 'Jimmy' Flatley will be in the lead in his F6F Hellcat, Jimmy's son James III in his Vietnam-era VF-31 ‘Tomcatters’ Phantom in the slot, and on the Hellcat’s wings will be Jimmy’s grandsons Joseph in a VFA-131 F/A-18A Hornet and Seamus in his VF-154 F-14A Tomcat. The formation was plotted using perspective projection by descriptive geometry. The perspective of the scene is based on a typical viewer’s position in front of the 18 x 36 in. painting. On a technical note, while this is a ‘fantasy’ legacy flight that never occurred in real life, I did try to maintain verisimilitude by carefully increasing in perspective the angle of attack of the jets as they are slowed down to stay with the Hellcat. And, just as the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels ‘shift’ some of their formations slightly to effect more pleasing views of the jets as they fly by, I plotted the Tomcat a little higher on the F6F’s wing. My main goal was to have good views of each aircraft and their individual markings without overlapping one over another. I’ve picked out a complimentary sky and cloudscape for the background, and can’t wait to start mixing paint! But first, a couple of pencil studies to finalize my lighting and values.
