Recently Vineyard Team met with Alyssa Whitcraft to discuss how NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is making it easier to use satellite data in agriculture. "NASA has connected data about the Earth’s surface since 1972. One of the first applications was for agriculture. Alyssa Whitcraft, Executive Director of NASA Acres grew up in the wine industry at her family’s property, Whitcraft Winery, located in Santa Barbara California. Her goal is to make it easier for people and organizations to use satellite data to improve agriculture. Alyssa explains how different types of satellites including polar-orbiting and geostationary collect information that can be calibrated against crop-specific data to develop predictive models. Farmers can use these models to identify viral, fungal, bacterial, water, and nutrient stressors and forecast harvest. As the former Deputy Director of NASA Harvest, a consortium that advances the adoption of Earth observations (EO) to benefit global food security, Dr. Whitcraft played a key role in the development of the Consortium from the ground up. Building on her success, Alyssa continues to lead in her role with NASA Acres, focusing on bridging cutting-edge #space technology with practical applications in U.S. #agriculture. ?She is also recognized for founding and directing the Harvest Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture Initiative (SARA), which unites key stakeholders to build a robust evidence base for #SARA practices through the innovative use of EO data. Tatiana Loboda, Professor and Chair of the , praised Alyssa’s achievements, stating: "Her commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and mentoring the next generation of scientists has had a profound impact on our department, the university community, and the field of geographical sciences." ?? What do we associate with satellites? At first, the word conjures up images of the cosmos, the universe, and the view of the Earth from above. But satellite technology has long gone beyond beautiful photographs of mesmerizing views.? ?? Open-source data from Landsat and other satellites has been used to develop cloud-based analysis platforms such as EOSDA Crop Monitoring and EOSDA LandViewer. These platforms help bring functional data to more people. In the summer issue of The Furrow Magazine by John Deere, Yevgenii Marchenko, EOSDA’s Sales Team Lead, shares his thoughts on how data is already helping farmers. ??
