To be or not to be...a hybrid workplace is here to stay? That is the question of the day! Flipping the switch in returning to the office isn't as easy as one thinks. More so even implementing a hybrid model in the workplace is difficult as well....there are quite a bit more preparations and strategies to think through on multiple levels...from logistics to the culture to designing of office spaces and more. So before you make that decision to push that button or pull on that lever (as in this picture), make sure you have people around you that you include in the decision-making process moving forward. PWC’s survey results are in “most companies are heading toward a hybrid workplace where a large number of office employees rotate in and out of offices configured for shared spaces. This model embraces the flexibility that most employees (and some employers) crave after working from home for months. It’s also a complicated way to organize the work week and is likely to transform a company’s culture, employee engagement, the way the work gets done and how office space is used.” #culture #employeeengagement #futureofwork

One unexpected outcome from the pandemic has been the generally positive response to remote work. A Jan 2021 PwC survey found that 83% of employers thought that remote work has been a success for their company. Another survey in Jan 2021 from YouGov found that 86% of employees currently working remote would like to continue to do so after the pandemic. In response, many companies – including Facebook, Salesforce, Shopify, Ford Motor Company, Target, and bp are allowing employees more flexibility to work from home, in some cases in hybrid models. Some are gravitating towards a “hub-and-spoke” approach (similar to large consulting firms), where a firm might have less space in more cities rather than a few large offices. Hybrid work, however, will require new behaviors and protocols to avoid a class system where those in-office are privileged relative to those working from home. As we are finally getting into the post-vaccine era many governments and businesses are beginning to relax or suspend pandemic-related mandates. But as this is unchartered territory, business leaders are facing a new set of challenges, including whether to have and enforce vaccination policies, the wisdom of transitioning to a remote or hybrid work environment, and whether to permit flexible remote work schedules for employees. Considering remote workers as less engaged than their office counterparts is a dangerous and completely inaccurate perspective. Productivity has gone up for most individuals and companies (not surprising either because remote work increases productivity). The prevailing data on remote or hybrid work prove the exact opposite of what WeWork CEO is asserting here. The key values that people want to retain are flexibility, autonomy, psychological control and reduced work/family conflict. Zoom fatigue is a product of over-indexing on video conferencing. In my book, Remote Work Revolution, I devote an entire chapter on how we should match digital tools to work objectives. In many cases, we need to use more asynchronous modes in our repertoire. The CEO of zoom agrees with me. Mr. Manthrani should take advantage of the power of WFA to advance his business. The people who have stronger job satisfaction than WFH employees are those who can work from anywhere. That's the opportunity to explore.

As a class of 2020 college graduate, I entered the workforce remotely. My coworkers and I have never once met each other in person – it's been very strange. And while I certainly do enjoy working from the comfort of my own home, I do oftentimes dream of the day where I will be able to work in an office.
