Wednesday is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), and professionals are expressing why this day is still so vital to the community. Recent data reveals only 43.86% of LGBTQIA+ Australians feel comfortable to be out at work, and the fight against homophobia is not yet won. LinkedIn Top LGBTQIA+ Voices are urging Australians to speak up against discrimination.
- Consultant Budi Sudarto says it's a day to "remember that socio-cultural discrimination and state-sanctioned persecution of members of the #LGBTQIA+ communities still exist and are rising around the world", while Project Rocket Founder Lucy Thomas says solidarity can be achieved by "uplifting those most marginalised ... and making space for diverse voices".
- Addressing younger LGBTQIA+ Aussies, outgoing Qantas CEO Alan Joyce posted, "My message to you is that you’re not alone. Change is happening and things will get better."
- ACON's Australian Ally of the Year Janani D'Silva says there is no such thing as a "passive ally", and everyone has a role to play. "When discriminatory language and behaviour is taking place — stand up and use your voice to say 'That's really not the way to speak any more.'"
