Why back a female-led startup?

Investment firms are increasingly looking to fund female-led businesses in Australia amid a growing recognition that they are more profitable than those established by men, reports The Australian Financial Review. Jackie Vullinghs from AirTree Ventures, which backed Canva, says her team works hard to overcome conscious gender bias. She says the big difference is female entrepreneurs present the most “realistic” version of their plan, where men offer the most “optimistic”. Venture firm Grok Ventures has allocated 60% of its portfolio into businesses with a female founder, notably solar and battery financing firm Brighte founded by Katherine McConnell – one of the 2021 LinkedIn Top Startups in Australia. Research from Boston Consulting Group found female-led startups in the US drew less than half the funding than male-led firms, but generated 10% more revenue over five years.? Today we unveil the 2021 LinkedIn Top Startups list in Australia, a look at 25 emerging companies that are growing fast, gaining attention and recruiting top talent. See who made the cut and weigh in using #LinkedInTopStartups.

Congrats to Verve on this cap raise and to the female investors for identifying the value of the mission in this business and also to the male investors who contributed to this vital initiative. This $2.6 million cap raise comes at a time when male-led start-ups raising capital continue to far outnumber those run by women. As women on average retire with 35% less in retirement savings than men AND women over 55 are the fastest growing group of homeless it is time that there is wider knowledge of and investors support of these issues.

“BCG looked at 350 start-ups in the US in 2018 and found that companies founded and co-founded by women had significantly better financial returns”. That’s just because we are clearly better leaders. One has just to objectively look at where male leadership is taking us. Leadership without empathy is rather connected to power abuse and exploitation, not much of a future there, as ecocide gains terrain towards international crime legal status. Supporting female founders is the best possible way to support life. #femaleleaders #femaleentrepreneur
