Web Summit underway in Lisbon

This is increidble. Flight from Dublin to Lisbon this afternoon (15:20). Aer Lingus asked for a hands up if you were heading to Web Summit. Insane. Plane is packed with nerds. Web Summit doesn’t start till tomorrow evening, but first networking events start this evening. Safe travels everyone.

Day one of Web Summit, and Lisbon is buzzing with AI talk everywhere you go. Tech leaders, founders, VCs, policymakers, government execs—everyone’s got something to say. There’s excitement about AI’s potential, but also plenty of concern around privacy and infrastructure. And, of course, data governance is a huge part of that conversation. With AI advancing at such a rapid pace, everyone is asking: how do we keep data private and governed responsibly? How are governments and companies staying on top of this? I had the chance to dive into these questions earlier today with Jason Albert, Chief Privacy Officer at ADP, and Lambert Hogenhout, Chief Data Officer at the UN, in a panel discussion on the power of governance and how AI is completely transforming this space. #WebSummit2024

The most interesting thing in tech: a new paper adds more evidence to the argument that AI can be helpful in pulling people out of filter bubbles and drawing them away from conspiracy theories. This is good! AI will be used by people who want to backfire facts to whatever imaginary fact-free worlds and belief systems that they have put together. But it can also do the opposite. Let's hope the product managers of the future figure out this good use of AI not all the other ones that add slop to our information ecosystem. And greetings from #websummit in Lisbon!
