Twitter CEO facing a 'glass cliff'?

Over the last few weeks, I've had a few conversations with leaders about the Glass Cliff - only a few had heard of it before. It's a phrase that has been in the news over the weekend as Twitter appoints Linda Yaccarina. The Glass Cliff is when a woman or minority group member is appointed to a leadership position in a challenging time when the risk of failure is high. It's a "second wave" of discrimination as once women have overcome the obstacles to leadership, they then have to overcome the workplace. ?? Pretty exhausting stuff. ?? What can you do to help? ? Recognise that the newly appointed leader is in a precarious situation ? Provide mentorship to support them ? Empower them to make decisions by giving them the agency to fulfil their roles ? With Linda Yaccarino being named as new Twitter CEO, let's be careful with our early celebrations. Yes, it's a win for Diversity in tech, but on the other side of the glass ceiling that Yaccarino has just cracked open is a dangerous cliff. The 'glass cliff' is a real phenomenon first researched and talked about by psychologists Michelle Ryan and Alex Haslam in which women and minority individuals become more likely to be appointed to?precarious leadership positions?during times of crisis or instability. Like many women before her, some worrry that Yaccarino is being set up for potential failure as she's handed a live grenade of Musk's Twitter. So, let's celebrate her new position as a win for DEI, but also let's keep working to address systematic bias so that all leaders, regardless of their gender or background will have the opportunities and conditions necessary to thrive and make lasting contributions. Linda Yaccarino – The newly appointed CEO Of Twitter as you must have known and if not, then get it noted down. ?? A more interesting fact about this appointment going on in the news recently is about the “Glass Cliff” phenomenon, she is most likely to face. So now, what this “Glass Cliff “actually means. The concept of the "glass cliff" pertains to a phenomenon wherein women and individuals from minority groups are often selected for leadership roles when organizations are facing challenging circumstances or imminent risks of failure. The twitter appointment is not the first case to be facing such allegations. Prominent examples often cited within the discourse on the phenomenon include the appointments of Ellen Pao at Reddit, Mary Barra at General Motors (GM), Carly Fiorina at Hewlett-Packard (HP), and Marissa Mayer at Yahoo. So, I ask, where is the problem? If women are being trusted at the moment of crisis, isn’t it something to be proud of. But I don’t find a reason as to why everyone is so convinced that is she is going to fail. Can’t they think of something different, like she can solve the issue at hand and make twitter even bigger than before meanwhile bringing back its lost glory. ?? This post isn’t about debating on the topic of women empowerment, gender disparity in executive positions and the unique challenges faced by women leaders in navigating difficult circumstances or anything related. This is purely about why can’t we just trust Linda in this and forget this glass cliff term. ?? Let me just reiterate something I said to Ewan Larkin last week: If incoming Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino is going to succeed, her sole job is to convince Elon Musk that he is wrong about moderation on the platform. I don't think there's a person on the planet who can get that done.

Of all the headlines about Linda this one grabbed my attention: Who is Linda Yaccarino & What You Need to Know. Well, here’s my take: On the one hand, there is the list of extraordinary achievements, as a transformational media and business executive, and rightly so. And let me tell you, the list is long and impressive. But when trying to learn about who Linda is, there’s the other hand. And that’s the foundation set by two incredibly hard working and devoted parents, who raised her and her two sisters. Early on, our parents instilled in us a strong value system – to help us be better people within our families, in our careers, and most importantly, in society. And while they constantly teach us more about life to this day, here are some of the values and lessons they’ve shared with us throughout our lives. 1. The RESPECT of others is paramount. Our parents would always tell us, that no matter what, treat everyone with kindness and care. Because people and RELATIONSHIPS matter most. 2. Be the VOICE of those in need. Whenever possible, we were encouraged to SPEAK up and advocate for those who were not being treated fairly or for those that needed help 3.You can ACHIEVE anything. Twitter's new CEO has her work cut out for her. In a matter of weeks, Linda Yaccarino?will be taking over as?Twitter's chief executive. She'll be tasked with keeping multiple stakeholders happy, despite those people often holding opposing views. People like: -Elon Musk (her new boss) -Advertisers -Everyday users So, why was Musk convinced that Yaccarino was the right person for the job? And how will Yaccarino get Musk, advertisers,?and?users on board for the new, reinvented Twitter? Yaccarino hinted at the answer in?a recent series of tweets?(which she?repeated the next day on LinkedIn): "I've long been inspired by [Elon Musk's] vision to create a brighter future. On the surface, you may not see this word as special. But when it comes to change management, the word "together" sends a powerful message. THIS is the 'glass cliff' theory IRL. The theory says when a company is in really bad shape, women step in to clean up the mess. Usually, they're set up to lose, and are pushed off a 'glass cliff' and take the fall for the company's failure. This is exactly what we’re seeing unfold at Twitter right now. It might be that women are trusted to clean up the mess. More likely though, it’s that men feel confident turning down a leadership role offered under tough conditions knowing that another opportunity will come up, while women feel like it’s their only shot so say yes—even if they’re being set up to fail. When crap hits the fan - bring in a female leader to clean up the mess. Researchers call it the glass cliff - elevating a woman to a position of power when things are going poorly which creates a higher risk of failure. Personally, I always enjoyed leading turnarounds. Great women are used to cleaning up messes of others. It is a time when leadership can truly impact an org. Where you have to get to the core of what matters and people are hungry for a hopeful way forward. You can't get much lower so up it is. Looking forward to observing how Linda leads and tackles the challenge to restore Twitter. Good news, with so much chaos, she's got ample opportunity to go forward. I'm absolutely livid right now. Elon Musk just announced that Linda Yaccarino will be the new CEO of Twitter. It's a classic example of the "glass cliff" phenomenon, where women and minorities are often given leadership positions in challenging circumstances where the risk of failure is high. We've seen this happen time and time again in the corporate world. - Marissa Mayer was hired as CEO of Yahoo at a time when the company was struggling to compete with Google and Facebook. Despite her efforts to turn the company around, she was ultimately unable to save Yahoo from its decline. When the company was sold to Verizon in 2017, Mayer was forced to resign. - Meg Whitman was hired as CEO of Hewlett-Packard at a time when the company was struggling financially. She was tasked with turning things around, but despite her efforts, HP continued to struggle. When the company split into two separate entities in 2015, Whitman was appointed as the CEO of one of the new companies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, but she ultimately resigned in 2018, as the company continued to struggle financially. - Ellen Pao was named the interim CEO of Reddit in 2014. She was tasked with improving the company's reputation and dealing with issues related to harassment and hate speech on the platform. However, her tenure was marked by controversy and criticism, and she ultimately resigned in 2015. It's time for us to recognize the "glass cliff" for what it is - a form of discrimination that needs to be addressed if we want to create a truly equitable workplace. Linda Yaccarino deserves a fair chance to succeed as the new CEO of Twitter, and we must hold companies accountable for creating equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender, race, or any other factor.
