TikTok recruits amid tech layoffs

TikTok is still hiring - and this is why. User growth has been relatively linear since 2018, but revenue growth has been exponential.? Growth this fast comes with a lot of growing pains, including hiring and retaining talent.? Couple that with regulatory concerns and a volatile global economic situation, it takes time to figure out the long term structure of a company making $10 billion/year vs $100 million.? With how much good talent is hitting the market from Twitter, Meta and others, it will be interesting to see how well ByteDance can take advantage. Meanwhile the threat of “banning” still comes from some politicians and talking heads.? As layoffs hit the tech and media world, The Information's Juro Osawa reported that TikTok is looking to grow its engineering team in Mountain View, CA. My colleague Ashley Rodriguez and I analyzed US work-visa data to understand what TikTok and its parent company ByteDance are offering to pay hires in locations like Mountain View, Washington, New York, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and Washington, DC. Today, more than 67,000 workers in the technology industry in the United States have been laid off while businesses are scrambling to make changes. Nevertheless, as developers, we should not become discouraged. The belief around most growing companies is that skill gaps and talent shortages will grow as most organizations focus on technology. Experts from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics say that by 2024 more than 8 million jobs will be created in the technology sector.? The anticipated future growth rate for all web developer careers up to 2030 is 13%. Tech layoffs are the buzz these days.?In this article, I stumbled across this spreadsheet of companies involved in layoffs.?Each Google doc then lead to an ACTUAL list of employees with name, function, position, visa status and LinkedIn profile.? AMAZING! As a tech recruiter of 20+ years I have seen many cycles of layoffs, but not in such detail and volume.?Employees laid off have often created these spreadsheets to help their fellow employees.? There was even a sheet with contact info for companies that are HIRING.? Tech hiring historically goes up and down like waves on a beach. #like Helping fellow colleagues in a time of stress and uncertainty certainly spreads some love and good karma.??But there are always other opportunities around the corner.? Update that resume and LI profile, reach out to former colleagues, friends and family and let them know your story.? People genuinely want to help but you have to let them know you need it.? TikTok’s swooping in to grab laid-off talent In November alone,?48k+?tech employees have been let go — many from Twitter and Meta. But whereas Meta is seeing ad revenue decline, TikTok is?forecasting?growth of ~150%, up from $4B last year to $10B this year. Now, TikTok’s San Francisco team, whose Mountain View office once belonged to Meta, is looking to nearly double its headcount, per?The Information. The team has grown from a few hundred to 1k+ since 2020, and TikTok is looking to add another 1k. Following layoffs at Twitter and Meta, TikTok recruiters have swooped in to snag job-seeking engineers. Interestingly,?TikTok’s US hiring efforts aren’t necessarily a business need, but a reputational one: The Chinese-owned company is being closely eyed for its privacy practices, and increasing its US presence could buy it time and trust from regulators.

I love a good contrast. “When Elon Musk bought Twitter and cut half its workforce earlier this month, TikTok’s in-house recruiters approached some of the laid-off software engineers about joining the viral video app’s Silicon Valley office. Then last week, the same recruiters contacted some of the engineers cut by Meta Platforms.” Makes perfectly sense for TikTok. Nevertheless the whole story makes me somehow sad.
