Going it solo. "Breaking up" with work friends is contributing to less #employeeengagement and #quietquitting. While many people like working remotely or in hybrid arrangements, the impact on organizational #culture is not favorable.... Office friendships that typically develop from shared vision and passion, working long hours together, or even coming together because of a common enemy (a competitor, a boss or rules/procedures) create #belongingness, which is essential to cultivating community - and loyalty to a company. As ties to colleagues - and a sense of #belonging - fade, it's easy to envision work becoming highly transactional and less relational. Rather than becoming less important, I believe the role of having #purpose that is broad enough to encompass a #socialmission - and genuinely bringing this to life in operations, policies and procedures (alongside communications, philanthropy and employee engagement activities) - will be the key for successful employers. Unless, the #futureofwork truly is transactional.... #gigwork for all but a few that work in corporate headquarters. What do you think? Interesting article from the The Wall Street Journal on work friendship/relationships. As younger people enter the workforce and the ripple effect of COVID-19 the way #work is viewed is changing. I worked at Walmart in my early twenties and I would go out with my co-workers after hours on weekends, it was a blast. As we graduated from college, moved on to different jobs, and got older that stopped. Ironically I feel the same way younger people do about after #work #socializing. As a married father of two, I have strict boundaries about work. I go to work, come home, and focus on family. Why? #family is very important to me. They need me and I need them. Maybe the days of going out for a after work drink are fading. Maybe it's for the best. You decide. #jobs #workculture #change https://lnkd.in/eYUHRVgi

Really concerned about young folk entering the workforce. So far, I’ve been trying to schedule 1:1s for skip levels and monitoring their workplace feedback in 15Five. Right now it takes a concerted/intentional effort to build good relationships with everyone inside your workplace. It will pay dividends for getting things done down the road.

My LI feed, like many I suspect, is replete with posts about the criticality of workplace recognition. Then I see this survey saying the opposite: "In a recent survey of nearly 1,000 U.S. employees, relationships with co-workers tied with recognition as the least important factors in job satisfaction. (Compensation and work-life balance ranked as the most important of the 14 choices, according to online software marketplace Capterra, which conducted the survey.)" What gives? Is this a Covid blip? I have some dear friends at work. It is unfortunate that people are feeling such a disconnect. I’m not nearly as productive without my colleagues.

I've had wonderful work friends every single place I've worked. We had a lot in common because we were on mission together. (Or had a boatload to commiserate about.) I keep in touch with many of them to this day. My life didn't necessarily revolve around my work friends, especially once my 20s were in the rearview mirror, but they always made my time in the office better and I learned a lot from them. Now, more people seem to be shunning the idea of having work friends and it appears to be tied to #quietquitting, a repudiation of corporate hustle culture. It's one thing to stand up for yourself and set work-life boundaries, but closing yourself off to meaningful connection and friendship seems extreme to me. What has your experience with work friendships been?
