The new Silicon Valley tech movement
There's a new ideology spreading across Silicon Valley and beyond called "effective accelerationism", with those who sign up to its core principles referring to themselves as "e/accs" (pronounced ee-acks). The movement, which began last year, argues that the development of technology, especially artificial intelligence, should be allowed to motor ahead without constraint. Embracing this philosophy will lead humanity to a post-scarcity technological utopia unhindered by regulators and doomsayers, e/accs say. Last week, tech billionaire Marc Andreessen published a 5,000-word "Techno-Optimist Manifesto", which encapsulates the accelerationist ethos. Critics, including the FT's Jemima Kelly, argue that unrestrained technological accelerationism is a bad idea, saying: "Andreessen's blind faith in all technology is dangerous."
