Starbucks wait times skyrocket
Orders are piling up at Starbucks, and baristas feel understaffed, Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous workers. They blame a new algorithm that assigns staff at the world’s biggest coffee chain based on customer forecasts and product availability, but doesn’t account for promotions and unpredictable customer requests. Wait times have ballooned this year, per Technomic, just as Starbucks reported a quarterly sales decline. Also vexing staff: Simultaneous demands to chat with customers and be fast, as well as handle in-person, drive-thru, mobile and delivery orders.
- Starbucks disputes it’s understaffed and says it has upgraded its labor algorithm and staffing policies. The company, which is also negotiating with unionized workers, plans to place a roving employee at each cafe more visibility into incoming orders to help alleviate jams.
- Starbucks, as part of an effort to give employees more hours, let go of 29,000 workers in the U.S. in the year ended in October, even as it added 380 stores.

I have never waited more than five minutes for any fast food or coffee. Forty minutes? ?? I don’t wait that long at the doctor’s office. Life is too short. Make your own coffee. ?? 40 minutes….who does that?
