One thing that might not get headlines about this article is the ability for employees during an RTO phase of business to seek exemptions for physical, mental, sensory impairment, or other disabilities. This is how you get equity within your workforce. Kudos to Starbucks for this. However, this shouldn't be something where managers have broad discretion on whether or not to accept those exemptions. I also don't think it's a businesses place to require medical documentation about their employees. If you're going to provide these exemptions, provide the exemptions. I know organizations have concerns about people taking advantage of these policies, but if you talk to people, folks taking those exemptions arbitrarily just to keep their remote work are exceedingly rare. https://lnkd.in/gWAEgYjZ

Another "do as I say, not as I do" leadership style. Starbucks is threatening termination for employees who aren't in-office 3?? days a week, per its existing policy. The new Starbucks #CEO Brian Niccol is literally "a 1000 miles away" ?? from HQ. He didn't move when taking the job, and he's not following Starbucks policy. Under criticism of his #remotework decision, he framed in-office time as something to use intentionally with flexibility. ?? He said he would use the office when needed, and he trusted his employees to do the same. His words... ?? "We're all adults here" ? “This is not a game of tracking. This is a game of winning...” ?? “I care about seeing everybody here succeed, and if success requires us being together more often than not, let’s be together more often.” He's been there less than two months, which is not enough time to assess the #RTO policy, let alone decide to enforce it with the ultimate stick.
