Spotify gives employees new playlist

New Work freedom @Spotify This week we announced a new work from anywhere policy extending the freedom for employees to adapt their workspace locations to their needs. The underlying core beliefs are: - Work isn’t something you come to the office for, it’s something you do - Effectiveness can’t be measured by the number of hours people spend in an office – instead, giving people the freedom to choose where they work will boost effectiveness - Giving our people more flexibility will support better work-life balance and help tap into new talent pools while keeping our existing band members - Operating as a distributed organisation will produce better and more efficient ways of working through more intentional use of communication and collaboration practices, processes and tools. Once I was turned down for a job just because I asked if there was a possibility to work from home if necessary. That was just 5/6 years ago - how things change! I remember the recruiter calling me the next day, furious, almost yelling at me saying "You can't ask questions like that!!" It makes me laugh now. #spotify #workfromhome

This is the future - work from anywhere in the world. I started working remotely for Accenture way back in 2000 and it was the best decision I ever made. Choosing where you live and keeping a job you love is a huge perk #work #recruiting #leadership and will help keep good people highly engaged.

What's your take on Spotify's "Work from anywhere" approach? In theory it sounds fantastic and I'm sure employees will welcome the flexibility shown by the company and it will be seen as another great reason to work for them. However it did get me thinking; if you were employed by Spotify how secure would it make you feel? If an employee can be based anywhere, will you be pushing for promotion against potential candidates based across the world not just in your office location? Will the company eventually be swayed to offer roles to people with the same skillset but lower salary expectations due to where they are based? Also how hard will it be to build/maintain a company culture and ethos when employees will potentially never see people outside of their team and all by video call? Let me know what you think....

Spotify announced on Friday their new WFA (Work from Anywhere) initiative by letting their employees choose where they’d like work, both for their preference of coming into the office or staying mostly at home and - most importantly - their geographic location in the world. I remember the days when I'd have to find a conference room to hide in at the office. Or pretend I was listening to music on my headphones even though I wasn't. I didn't do these things because I was slacking off. It was the opposite. I wanted to focus on more strategic work - to think critically about how to put a leadership training together that would have the most impact. I needed to get into a zone - without distractions from others. But because productivity was often correlated with face time (and finding an empty conference room was as tough as winning the lottery), I accepted the fact that it may take me 10 hours to do work that could have taken me 5 if I were working at home (or anywhere other than at my desk). Now, in 2021, in the middle of the biggest remote work experiment of our time, more and more companies are finally realizing that effectiveness can’t be measured by the number of hours people spend in an office, but rather, on the quality of the work they deliver.
