Skills you need early in your career

While the onus is on employers to assess potential and provide for it, today’s workers also need to actively continue to develop skills to stay relevant. Growing up in the 1990s, education was king. Get a bachelors, my mother said — and then ideally a masters and a PhD — and it would unlock a bountiful career with untold earning potential. It is still true that degrees translate to higher lifetime earnings, but it is not enough.

We keep talking about the importance of skills. But are we willing to do the really difficult work? ... #skillsbasededucation requires a means of determining which skills students are ACTUALLY LEARNING in various programs, not just what is listed on a curriculum overview. #skillsbasedhiring requires knowing what skills are ACTUALLY REQUIRED for the job rather than what is on recycled job descriptions. This work is difficult, detailed, and cannot be done in silos. Both sides of this market have to make the shift. But if we do it... we open the world to so many people who are disadvantaged by our current system. It's worth the work.

The World Economic Forum has suggested that 1 billion people need to be trained in new and evolving skills by 2030. LinkedIn data shows that skill sets for jobs have already changed by 25% since 2015 and this is expected to double by 2027.
