Show Gen Z the money
College students want the big bucks. According to a recent survey of those pursuing bachelor’s degrees, college students expect to earn $103,880 in their first job. That’s more than twice the most recent estimate of an average starting salary ($50,000), per the National Association of Colleges and Employers. The tight labor market has “likely encouraged unrealistic salary expectations that will leave students disappointed,” researchers said.
- Journalism students are the most likely to overestimate the average starting salary for their field, expecting $107,000 while more likely earning $45,000.
- Computer science students have the most realistic expectations — and the highest earning potential, with average starting salaries around $75,000. Engineering and math students have similar average starting salaries.

Fox Sports just locked in a deal with Tom Brady (role as broadcast analyst - when football playing days are over) for 10 years / $375M. To my knowledge, Tom has no broadcasting /journalism experience. So why the big pay day? In my opinion, Tom has proven himself on/off the field for decades and his soon to be employer (Fox Sports), believes that his Football IQ, personality, and experience on/off the field will translate into increased viewership and ratings. ? In most cases, a student coming out of college has little "real life" work experience. A hiring company has a face and GPA scores to go off of. My fear is that students with an expectation of a 6 figure salary may choose to sit on the sideline until they get one (or realize they overshot their market value). ? My advice to those coming out of college would be: Choose a field that you have a passion for. Find an employer willing to give you a chance (for reasonable wage) and work you’re a** off. Be the first one in the office and last one to leave – learning every aspect of the business. Once you do this, your market worth not only goes up tremendously with current employer – but also gives you the experience and expertise you will need to demand that 6 figure pay day!
