Retiring earlier and enjoying it
Americans aren't good at envisioning life in retirement, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s latest survey of workers and retirees. About 28% of respondents expect to retire at 65, the traditional age for many years, but the median actual retirement age is 62 — the earliest one can start Social Security benefits. While money remains a concern, about 70% say their lifestyle is the same or better than what they envisioned; studies show that retirees focus more on the things that matter most, which can promote greater happiness.
- Another disconnect occurs when it comes to post-retirement employment: About 75% expect to work while retired, but only 30% actually do.
- About 68% of workers and 74% of retirees say they're somewhat or very optimistic about being able to live comfortably.
- One reason 65 is a popular choice for a retirement target: That's when Medicare eligibility begins.
