OpenAI chief scientist to depart

A big change happening at OpenAI: co-founder and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever is leaving. If you recall, Dr. Sutskever was part of the board rebellion that briefly ousted CEO Sam Altman last November. He has since said he regretted his role in that decision. OpenAI has named researcher Jakub Pachocki to replace Dr. Sutskever. "OpenAI would not exist without him and certainly was shaped by him," Altman said in an interview with The New York Times about his co-founder. I sat down with Sutskever last September to talk about what excited him about AI—and what scared him: “It’s going to be monumental, earth-shattering. There will be a before and an after,” he told me. Three weeks after we met, Sutskever apparently helped pull the emergency cord, leading to Altman's brief ouster in OpenAI's now infamous weekend coup. And... Ilya Sutskever just left OpenAI. He's been completely absent from public life since he helped stage a coup at OpenAI and ouster Sam Altman. A big meme on Twitter has been "Where's Ilya?" and "What did Ilya see?". Whatever it was, it's a real loss for OpenAI and the world at large. He has a grounded sense of the gravity involved in unleashing AGI upon the world. A few months ago, my very favorite OpenAI employee, Andrej Karpathy also left. Together, Ilya and Andrej were some of the most important AI minds alive. The impact of this will be felt for a while I think. Importantly, there now seems to be a lack of moral compass at OpenAI now. Alignment is no longer a priority. Fingers crossed they don't go full profit-motive with their AI systems... Big News in the AI World: Ilya Sutskever Departs OpenAI What a week it has been in the world of artificial intelligence! First, Google held their annual I/O conference unveiling a slew of new generative AI capabilities. And now, a major shakeup at OpenAI - co-founder and longtime Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever has departed the company. As reported by TechCrunch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the news, calling Sutskever "easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field." Indeed, Sutskever's contributions to OpenAI and the field of AI cannot be overstated. He has been a driving force behind the development of breakthrough technologies like GPT-3 that have reshaped what we thought was possible with artificial intelligence. While Sutskever is leaving to pursue "something personally meaningful," his impact will surely be long-lasting. OpenAI President Greg Brockman noted that Sutskever "played a key role in helping build the foundations of what OpenAI has become today."
