The biggest social etiquette "don't" at a wedding—besides wearing white—used to be showing up empty-handed. Not anymore.
My latest for The Wall Street Journal explores a topic I'm particularly invested in as someone whose weekends are quickly filling up with weddings: Changing norms around gift registries ??. More precisely: The elimination of registries entirely.
These days, more people hosting weddings, birthdays and baby showers are telling their guests that their presence is present enough. Many feel guilty asking for more amid inflation, mounting job losses in some industries and the financial strain of keeping up with the boom of celebrations. Some also worry that, with so many expenses, fewer people will show up.
Event organizers have sent some 33,000 digital invitations on Evite so far in 2023 that include the words “no gifts” or “no presents,” which represents 4% of all invites. That marks an 18% increase from the same period in 2022 ??
As Niyati Desai Jolis told me: "It feels strange to ask people to contribute to a $1,000 stroller that I want when it’s tough enough to make ends meet in this economy."

I love this and recently saw a "de-influencer" movement on tik tok, highlighting over and unsustainable consumption and working to combat rampant consumerism to get folks to really think about their purchases and purchasing power- really appreciated that!
