Music icon Michael Gudinski dies

There are many talent buyers, true Promoters are thin on the ground. Michael Gudinski was the best Australian Promoter out there, which covered the best of Touring (Frontier), Artist Management, Booking Agency, Venues, TV/ Movie productions, Record label, numerous festivals, including many fund raisers & merch arm, a true 360 business before others. He never missed a beat, always ahead of the pack. A massive advocate for women in music, which is rare. Not to forget the happy creative environment he created for his loyal family of employees, some of which have worked with the group for over 30 years, is not uncommon & true testament. Known as the Hotel California, you could check out but never really leave, people knew he’d welcome them back... this speaks volumes. The loss is not limited to people who work in music; Australia will be poorer too. Some people buy events, he dreamt, imagined and made events! A true leader most will never know the impact he made. Ex Vic Premier put it best: “the music has been paused with Michael Gudinski’s death. He has kept us in colour and movement for decades. Very sad day with the passing of Michael Gudinski. MG has been one of the giants of the live entertainment industry for 5 decades and helped put Australia on the map for international touring while being a fiercely passionate advocate for Australian artists. Michael’s powerful legacy will live on for a generation and inspire others in the industry to carry the torch into the future. Condolences to his family and colleagues at Mushroom and Frontier.

Vale Michael Gudinski 1952 – 2021 Forever grateful for the music you brought to Adelaide Oval.

RIP Michael Gudinski. More than a music industry leader, he was a magnet for Melbourne and a force of nature. A quick story: In 2009, like so many, I was devastated by the Black Saturday Bushfires. I thought something had to be done, so I contacted friends such as Cameron Adams at the Herald Sun, Grant Gillies at Network 10, Keiran Beasley at Nova, Antony H. and others to put a fundraiser together. Within three days, Tammy Schlitz from the Red Cross gave us official approval and we got about ~150 bands on board. But despite our collective skills and experience, we all knew the only person who could pull off something this huge would be Michael Gudinski. We met with Keith Ridgway, Gudinski's right hand man, who brought the Mushroom Group's formidable resources to the fore. With a broader group of music industry promoters, production people and events geniuses, we created Sound Relief. Gudinski brought the biggest fundraising concert in Australia's history to life. Whether this event or any number of massive cultural events, businesses, and artist careers he created with his team in Dundas Lane, in a world of people who play it safe, he was a visionary who just made crazy and creative things happen. And made a spectacular living from it. He will be missed. #MadeInMelbourne

The much-loved Australian music legend died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne, Australia. Michael Gudinski was a key figure in shaping the Australian music industry. He founded the Mushroom Group in 1972 at just 20 years old, which flourished into Australia’s largest independent entertainment group covering touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services. Some of Australia’s most iconic albums have been released under one of his Mushroom Group record labels. His touring company Frontier Touring is Australia’s leading promoter, touring the biggest names in global music since its inception in 1979. [Statement continued in comments]

Michael Gudinski was a visionary Melburnian who had an unrivalled passion for music in our city. Michael made a significant contribution to Melbourne being world-renowned as a premier live music city. His passing is incredibly sad and a devastating loss for his family, friends and Melbourne. Our sympathies are with Sue Gudinski and the Gudinski family. Michael’s contribution to our city was made over many decades and he helped uncover some major Australian musicians. More recently, Michael played a critical role in our pop up busking program and was dedicated to being a key part of the economic and cultural revival of our city. Michael was a proud and loyal Melburnian and a true friend to so many in our city.
