Just 3 years ago or so, I was one of the people profiled below. I started my adult career in the wake of 9/11 and dot-com bubble bust. I graduated with my MBA in 2009, the depths of the Financial crisis. That coupled with my already risk-averse immigrant mindset, my personal balance sheet looked akin to that of a cave-dwelling cash-hoarding dragon. ????
Thankfully, I had a good friend who over the course of a few hours (and a couple bottles of wine) convinced me to put my actual education and financial acumen to use for my own benefit instead of just for my employers’ benefit, and make my money earn its keep by putting it to work.
I needed that wake up call back then - and am always happy to pay it forward by helping others who have trepidations about equity markets.... I’m likely biased because of my #Columbia education but I always recommend Ben Graham’s Value Investing, Warren Buffett’s annual shareholder letters, and Charlie Munger’s Poor Charlie’s Almanac as the best starting point, foundational reading for anyone interested in understanding how to value equities.
Word to the wise - don’t jump until you have a investment thesis on that company - and once you do take the plunge, check your thesis and assumptions periodically, not the stock price.
