Meta seen spending even more on AI
Meta's investment in artificial intelligence could hit $50 billion next year, one analyst predicts, as Facebook's parent company scales back its metaverse ambitions. Meta has been focusing heavily on AI, having just released a new model of its Llama chatbot, which it's touting as capable of dethroning ChatGPT. While some investors are growing skeptical of tech giants' AI expenditures, Quartz reports that at least one industry expert sees Meta's spending as "distinct from the wasteful dollars it's put into developing the metaverse." The company is set to report quarterly earnings Wednesday.
- With a new tool dubbed "AI Studio," Meta now lets U.S. users create AI versions of themselves in Instagram or on the web, which can talk to followers and respond to comments on behalf of creators or businesses.
- CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a "wide-ranging fireside chat" about the future of AI with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at a conference on Monday.
