London Marathon sprints to equality

Positive news to see disabled and non-disabled athletes will be paid the same amount of prize money at the London Marathon this year. Hopefully many events will follow this lead across the whole sports industry. Prize money is one variable. All stakeholders in sport - rights holders, sponsors, media, fans etc - need to collectively come together to create transformational impact on driving social inclusion in society and empowering the lives of the 1.2 billion persons, 15% of the global population, with disabilities. Competing in a marathon is one of the purest forms of sporting endeavour. It’s totally correct to have equal prize money. Nice move by the event organisers! (I have participated in 4 London marathons and have always been several thousand places off the prize money!)

I was extremely heartened to read this morning that the London Marathon is to become the first marathon in the world to offer equal prize money for its wheelchair and able-bodied races, really great to see, lets hope many more events follow, well done to Hugh Brasher and his team - certainly the right move.
