Job offer rescinded? Do this

Had a recent experience like that. I was offered position, invited to slack and informed I'd be contacted re specifics for onboarding. Said hi and introduced myself, a few people said hi back and welcome - but nothing about on boarding. When I followed up, i received no reply and the next day no longer had access to the slack channel. I figured treating people like this is not an employment culture I want to be part of, so better happened right away.

Last year I received a verbal offer from a local company, with a follow-up e-mail summarizing the parameters that the offer would contain (salary/bonus/RSUs/vacation). I was told that the official offer would come in one week. Two weeks later I called the recruiter and was told they "decided to go in another direction" after discussing with the CEO (his approval of the RSUs was needed). I was quite disappointed initially, and briefly considered if I might have legal options to pursue. Then I realized that having the CEO derail a months-long recruiting process at the 11th hour was a red flag, seemingly exposing poor communication/culture. This was probably not a company I would enjoy working for, so I moved on and landed a role that I had been trying to move into.

Another comment to the one below - keep your resume updated every 3-4 years!!! Be proactive!! Too often I have a client tell me they need a resume asap because they just heard about a position. Be proactive - is your job worth staying current?

I would like to see employers compensating those who quit last role based on job offers. If you ever leave & want to come back to the old role, don't burn the bridge. My follow-up might depend on how employers communicated. Gratitude in emails with follow-up if I ever see myself working there and it they did it the right way. Asking them to have my file open in future when they are ready to hire. I would ask what would be the process in future to reapply. Some companies have a process and they might archive information. You might have to redo things all over. Ask for contacts to follow up in the near future & nurture relationships. If the company neglected emotional intelligence, I would thank then move on, never to look back. OR Post on social media to raise an awareness about how not to rescind offers. This action might depend on what is at stake. We all say don't burn the bridge. I have burnt the bridge to never look back. I keep writing about unfair things in the corporate world without naming. ?? The world needs to know bad employers. How else can we hold employers to the highest standard if we don't talk about it?

It's difficult to clearly predict how exactly one would react should a job offer be rescinded but it's normal to expect some level of disappointment and defeat, especially if it's been a long jobsearch journey. To some extent an employer can help by being transparent about the need to rescind and be respectful and understanding by sharing this in an appropriate and timely manner. Things do happen but employers must be reminded that they are dealing with humans who need jobs for survival. You never know what one person's journey might be to get to that point so it's imperative that they communicate any change quickly and with clarity. As for the jobseeker it's imperative that one approaches the job search with options and an open mind. To give one a solid foundation to fall back on in case this happens, a personal brand is essential. Building a personal brand opens the gate to more options and opportunities. It's not always the case that you will have multiple offers but if that one offer is rescinded you will have the opportunity to leverage your personal brand by way of your network to get back out there and start the jobsearch again. No one can predict an outcome but you can better prepare for anything.

Just had this happen to a friend- the day before she was supposed to start the offer was rescinded. She immediately hopped back on LinkedIn and started connecting with her community & network- it's been a powerful reminder that we all need to create a career insurance policy for ourselves. Best way to create one? Personal branding and relationships!
