GM expects EV profit by end of '24
General Motors is expecting a stronger-than-anticipated 2024, including a "positive variable profit" from its electric vehicle unit in the back half of the year. The auto giant's $43 billion in first-quarter revenue exceeded analysts' forecasts. It also reported a 24% jump in profit for the quarter, buoyed by reliably sturdy pickup truck sales and solid demand for SUVs, both of which outweighed softer sales in China. GM saved more than $100 million by scaling back its driverless-car investments in Cruise, and it expects to sell 200,000 to 300,000 EVs by the end of the year.
- At least 10 federal lawsuits have been filed against GM in the past month over its connected car data collection practices, which led to spikes in drivers' insurance premiums. The GM vehicle owners say they weren't clearly advised that data would be collected and shared with insurers.
- Rival carmaker Stellantis has laid off roughly 200 workers at a suburban Detroit assembly plant.
