Execs fired after AI scandal at SI
The publisher of Sports Illustrated has fired two executives amid an uproar over the brand's use of artificial intelligence, Futurism reports. A company representative said the departures of chief operating officer Andrew Kraft and president Rob Barrett were part of a restructuring, and unrelated to a recent Futurism report that SI was publishing stories under fake names, bios and photos. A Los Angeles Times columnist called the brand's AI scandal "a stunning fall for one of the great icons of American sports journalism." The Arena Group lost 20% of its stock value in the wake of the news.
- Futurism reports that article text was also AI-generated, citing anonymous sources. The Arena Group said in a statement that the third-party provider behind the fabricated content "assured us that all of the articles in question were written and edited by humans."
- The union representing "The Humans" at SI responded to the allegations, saying: "We demand the company commit to adhering to basic journalistic standards, including not publishing computer-written stories by fake people."
