It was realizing I can’t use, for a traditional job, my newly earned degree because I need to be home with my children. I earned my degree 30 years late and was hopi g to begin to change the world in a bigger way. I’m, instead, changing it through the home educating of my two youngest. Our family has grown much closer in 2020, especially because my husband has been working from home.

Sadly, many folks who have been furloughed or laid off due to the pandemic, are still in search of their next opportunity - even 9 months later. The biggest takeaway for one’s career during this year would have to be their gumption, consistency, and the resilience necessary to forge ahead, while making new connections, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. We’ve been asked to adapt - and not just an ordinary adaptation, but one of an uncertain and ever changing one. I really have to commend the folks who have stayed positive during this time. And even if you received a job rejection (personally for me, I’ve lost count but I know it’s well over 100 at this point), just remember that this outcome was anything but a rejection; it was a redirection. Just imagine if you were granted an interview, the firm hired you on, and you found out the culture was completely different from what you envisioned. So I say again, the biggest positive out of all of this, at least for me, IS the positivity. If you don’t allow the negativity in, if you don’t succumb to believing you’re a failure, if you make the most out of every opportunity and put yourself out there, you will accomplish the biggest feat: trusting and believing in yourself.

Hello Andrew, I was laid off of a big position earlier this year but rediscovered my self-employment only in a different format ?? . I have been learning and getting amazing support to launch forward. In the mean time, lost my home to the Almeda Fires, dealt with some medical issues that are better now and my child contracted COVID and yes she's well and had a mild case but I can't see her for the holidays. The old saying,"Besides that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" LOL, after all of that with FAITH & HOPE, you have to have a wee bit of humor! Thank you so much Andrew, really appreciate the question. Appreciation was more the theme of my year!

2020 can be looked upon as a year of 'Hope' and 'Education'. Many took this as an opportunity to rescale their abilities in their domain. Perhaps, it would be interesting to observe how many will actually be able to apply them. As per a generic study, if anyone won't use their newly gained skills in another 6 days then there are chances that it can't be recalled. Moreover, I have taken a different approach and re-skilled on the same set of skills while adding new ones and taking freelance work — to keep up the knowledge.

For me, it was trying out new things, stretching out of my comfort zone, and showing up more consistently online with virtual speaking & training to help a global audience.

The defining moment for me was realizing that it's okay to be dependent on the help of others. From gaining an even deeper appreciation of our house cleaner and babysitter who keep our professional lives running, to my friends who each lectured me for not calling them in the middle of the night when I should have gone to the hospital with what I later found out was probably COVID, to the people I work with (clients, vendors, partners, coaches) who supported me through the changes this year. We all need help. And asking for help doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're strong enough to know your strength is in your community.

Couldn't control job loss during a pandemic but the highlight has been the kindness and empathy shown by so many offering to help. I've met so many fascinating people, drawn inspiration from their stories/journey and have become their cheerleader as much as they've become mine. We've all learned that we may be perfect and do everything we can for the job and still lose bc of things we can't control. I've also discovered and enjoyed a lot of expensive artisan chocolates (supporting small businesses) to wallow in with the tough losses.

Andrew Seaman definitely an interesting year. Not in regards to a job change in 2020 but the whole perspective on work and how we all have had to make changes. I’m proud to have kept moving forward.
Of course losing my job due to Covid was a defining moment - but I always try to look for silver linings. Staying motivated is hard enough in normal times and during a pandemic even more so. When my mind started drifting into a negative, downward spiral, I would go for a hike at a local forest preserve. It made me more grateful, provided perspective and provided greater focus. The physical benefits are also obvious!
