Career planning 101

What are some successful career planning strategies? Many people rely on luck and chance in their careers. While that’s fine, these people could also benefit from some planning to help them get to where they want to go. In the latest edition of #GetAhead, LinkedIn members share their #career planning advice. Among the most important points they mentioned was the need to create flexible plans. There's career planning before the pandemic - and then there's career planning *after* the pandemic. Dorie Clark, who teaches at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business, and Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic who is a professor of business psychology at Columbia Business School provide suggestions on how you can reshape your career at a time of great change. "In many professions, it’s likely you’ll have far more freedom moving forward to shape, and maybe even control, the terms by which you’ll work. In Dorie’s forthcoming book?The Long Game, she shares the story of Annmarie Neal, a successful HR executive who for more than 25 years — even pre-pandemic — managed to convince her employers to let her work from a small town in the Colorado mountains. She’d ask potential employers, “’Do you want to hire the best person for the role, or the best person in your zip code?’” Post-Covid, many more employees will be in a position to pose that same question."

How much should you invest in mapping out a career-path early on? There are two schools of thought--the ones who think you should be flexible and opportunistic, going with the flow, and the ones who think you should work backward from your ultimate career gla, planning way into the future. I have three kids in this age range, so this is important to me, and something I'm thinking about. One is a Recent College Grad, one a Rising College Sophomore, and one Incoming First Year. My advice is in between--have a vision of where you want to end up, but not necessarily the specific job (because who knows if that job will even exist in 20 years). Focus on the kind of life you want to have, the people you want to be surrounded by, the problems you want to solve. There is no one "ideal first job" and once you get your foot in the door, in almost any door, it will open up other opportunities.
