Can car rentals drive EV adoption?

I’m a passionate EV advocate. Still, I understand the frustrations experienced by the author of this article who was unexpectedly handed an EV car rental. My family experienced a very similar experience. When I went to my niece’s graduation at Clemson last summer, my son got assigned an EV. At first I thought, “no problem,” but I was wrong. We stayed at an AirBnB, not a hotel, where charging is typically more readily available. We ended spending a lot of —?what was supposed to be quality family time —?stressing out about and configuring how we could adequately charge our rental car. Overall, I think renting an EV is a great way for a newbie to test out driving an electric vehicle and a wonderful way for EV-lovers to keep up with their routines. But this option should be optional, not a surprise for renters. It should only be rented in locations where there’s ample charging options. One day, (hopefully soon), we will reach a point where anyone, anywhere, can conveniently rent an EV without an issue. But we're not there yet. Good piece. If you want EVs to win, don’t just throw them at people. It’s a different way of driving. A new learn. I’ve put thousands of miles on different electrics over the years and know you have to re-think certain things. Has anyone else heard of this -- getting an #EV as a rental car sprung on you when you didn't expect it? This is nuts! And as The Atlantic writer Saahil Desai says, this craziness is "tailor-made to amplify the downsides of electric cars, especially among impressionable newbies." What brilliant mind thought this was a good idea?
