The federal government says that Australia's international borders will remain closed until at least June due to the "emergence of more highly transmissible" coronavirus variants. At least 40,000 Australians remain stranded overseas.
Australia's international borders will remain closed until at least June, the federal government announced late on Tuesday night. The move means that the country will have effectively been sealed off from the rest of the world for 15 months — even if borders open by July. Australian citizens are currently banned from leaving the country unless they get an exemption. The government says that the emergency period extension is "about mitigating that risk for everyone’s health and safety”. Tourism groups said the onus was now on the government to provide a road map for how to ensure the industry can reopen. https://lnkd.in/dckdseQ
It's remarkable to think that by the end of the government's newly announced extension to border closures that Australia will have been basically sealed off from the rest of the world for 15 months. That's an increasingly worrisome number. Expats and tourism operators are also fretting that 15 months could easily become 18 months. https://lnkd.in/dPx6F4a

I would suggest that even 18 months is optimistic. In my opinion, the international borders are unlikely to open before March 2022. I hope, pray, I am wrong.

I argue moving forward both community & industry interest & engagement around this topic must be more invigorated. As COVID-19 vaccines ?? bed themselves in, Australia’s position on where too for our international border - for departing & arriving travellers ?? ?? ?? ?? ??♂?- will quickly become a very serious ?? decision. And rightfully so as our future is very much reliant on remaining a globally aligned and outward facing nation! It would also be helpful if Australia’s vaccine rollout moved out of first gear. To date it has been extremely disappointing and despite the spin, totally devoid of ambition, urgency and clarity. Without this, all talk of border reopening in any meaningful way is redundant.

I just came home on a business class flight I paid for myself (I’d decided to be over there so in my mind I should cover the costs) and am now in quarantine. I was a bit sad to see no other people in one leg of my flight - so many people want to come home and yet the business class section was almost completely empty. I respect Australia’s very protective stance as it’s kept so many people safe during this time, however I do wonder whether there is a possibility of getting more people onto planes that are already flying to Australia... it seems a terrible waste.
