Apple hit with DoJ antitrust suit
The Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, making the company the latest tech giant — after Meta, Amazon and Google parent Alphabet — to have to defend itself against claims of monopolistic behavior in court. The government alleges that Apple illegally maintains iPhone dominance by barring rivals from hardware and software features. Apple has also faced harder antitrust scrutiny in Europe, including being fined US$2 billion after Spotify complained that Apple failed to notify users of alternate ways to pay for music streaming.
- Apple is also facing a legal challenge from Meta, Spotify, Match and the makers of other popular apps over its plan to charge a hefty commission for payments made outside of its app store.
- The commission plan came in response to a 2021 ruling forcing Apple to allow software makers to direct users to payment methods outside the app store, which can be cheaper.
