Americans borrowing to pay med debt
Around 40% of Americans are either struggling to pay health bills or are paying off health-related debt, says Axios, citing a report from The Commonwealth Fund. Medical bills are the largest source of debt for Americans; in the survey of 6,000 people taken from March to July 2022, 10% said they had mortgaged their home or taken on debt to pay off medical bills. Additionally, two in five people saddled with medical debt also reported facing other financial problems, despite more Americans than ever having health insurance.
