Amazon expands virtual health clinic

Amazon announced they have expanded telehealth services across all 50 states. For most services you can pay $30 for messaging services or $72 for a virtual visit. I’m a huge believer that primary and preventative care is how we improve population health. I think this is a step in the right direction, but hope they expand Medicaid/Medicare products so better serve individuals who cannot afford cash pay. #primarycare #virtualcare Amazon Clinic, Wheel, SteadyMD

Wow. Simplicity and access. This is great for those can afford it. Even more impressive will be options for those who can’t. The great thing about #innovation is that it allows us to use the lens of equity. Yet this is another swipe at cherry picking where the money in #healthcare is. The problem with that is that health needs don’t care about money. Amazon where is the plan to provide care to those less privileged? #healthequity

Amazon has expanded its own version of telehealth, Amazon Clinic, nationwide. The service follows the company's typical playbook of providing convenient access tied to their other products and services (right now Amazon Pharmacy), and a better customer experience. According to the press release announcing the expansion, Amazon is working to add other conditions. It's only matter of time before Amazon Clinic adds the ability to treat MSK conditions. They're one of the most common reasons patients visit their primary care doctor or an Urgent Care. I'm curious to see the approach here. Partner with an existing virtual MSK company (Hinge, Sword, Kaia, or relative newcomer RightMove) or build in house? Offer virtual PT or just diagnosis and treatment? Expand vertical integration to sell patients braces, OTC pain relievers, patches, rubs, and joint supplements? Many MSK conditions are best diagnosed and treated via in-person evaluation and possibly an imaging study. Is this on Amazon Clinic's road map? One could imagine the service eventually offering an appointment at a physical One Medical location (or MSK equivalent). Amazon Clinic is expanding to all 50 states, including nationwide telehealth services through its website and mobile app. If the patient needs a prescription, they can get it filled from Amazon Pharmacy with free shipping, or at any pharmacy of their choice. Example: Physician (or nurse practitioner) appt for UTI a.k.a. bladder, urinary tract infection, would cost $72 in Maryland. Current partners include Curai Health, Hello Alpha, SteadyMD and Wheel. Note: if you needed to fill script you’d still use insurance rx benefits card, GoodRx etc. at your usual pharmacy.

Amazon's recent acquisition of One Medical has raised eyebrows among healthcare professionals who doubted the company's potential to provide all medical services. With the recent launch of their Telehealth platform, Amazon's influence in the healthcare industry is only set to grow. My opinion, that Amazon may even create their own hospital network, but under a different name or spin off their healthcare division.
