Amazon buys One Medical for $3.9B
Amazon is acquiring primary-care company One Medical in an all-cash deal valued at US$3.9 billion, one of Amazon's largest acquisitions to date and a move that will take it much deeper into the health care industry. One Medical has more than 180 subscription-based clinics across the U.S. and had previously seen takeover interest from CVS, Bloomberg reports. One Medical also provides virtual care.
- The purchase represents Amazon's strongest move into healthcare since the e-commerce giant bought the online pharmacy Pillpack for US$753 million in 2018, and comes as the company re-thinks its physical footprint with a new retail CEO and a shift away from its house-brand.
- Amazon also announced that it will have "thousands of custom electric delivery vehicles" from EV startup Rivian in more than 100 U.S. cities by the end of this year. The ultimate goal: 100,000 EV delivery vehicles by the end of the decade.

WHOAAAAAAA....I absolutely LOVED One Medical when I used them in DC and Chicago and it always had such a great brand, feel and the "one stop shop" for bloodwork testing, doctors, etc all in one location was so convenient. This is not surprising as they've been getting into pharmaceuticals, but I wonder what impact it will have on the overall customer experience and design. I've been so disappointed in changes they've made to Whole Foods that I actually don't shop there anymore - even with any savings/discounts from Prime. Amazon has proven itself a smart logistics and tech company, but any retail experience I had with their book stores, their checkout-less stores, etc never really inspired any loyalty or enjoyment of the shopping process.
