Airbnb buys 'stealth' AI startup

AI is clearly here to stay as the applications of generative AI trickle into the hospitality industry. Airbnb has acquired an AI startup called GamePlanner.AI. The CEO of Airbnb Brian Chesky argues that generative AI will customize potential matches for customers as it relates to search parameters such as geography, type of dwelling, and other relevant priorities for customers. The competition will have to catch up. Providing customers with flexibility, options, and minimal transaction costs will be the key ways to attract and retain customers while building brand equity. When one considers the large players in the hospitality industry such as Marriott International, Hilton, or Hyatt Hotels Corporation, generative AI does not immediately come to mind. Airbnb has made its first acquisition as a public company, in a deal valued at just under $200 million. The startup is called Gameplanner.AI, which has been in “stealth mode” since its founding in 2020. According to Airbnb, the startup will help accelerate some of its AI projects. Gameplanner.AI was cofounded by Adam Cheyer, one of the founders of Siri who later co-founded Viv Labs, the foundation for Samsung’s voice assistant. https://lnkd.in/e8kbKJgN
