AI startup launches ‘kind’ chatbot
Do you ever wish the current generation of generative AI chatbots were, well, chattier? Artificial intelligence startup Inflection AI is hoping to meet that demand with its newly released chatbot, Pi, which the company bills as “a kind and supportive companion that’s on your side.” Founded by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, Inflection AI says Pi is a supportive “neutral listener” that can talk with users about personal problems and offer advice. Bloomberg cautions, however, that new large language model chatbots can surface many of the same cultural and gender biases that humans have online.
- Pi, which stands for “personal intelligence,” will suggest users seek professional help if they mention some key terms connected with mental health.
- Some experts are critical of the technology. “The performance of empathy is not empathy,” psychologist Sherry Turkle tells The New York Times.

Reid Hoffman As a severely dyslexic person, I am so excited for Pi’s abilities. It the short time I’ve been using it, it has successfully and succintly exhoed back what I am asking it to do. Pi also captured my feature requests to make Pi more accessible to the 1.6 Billion people in the world with dyslexia. In addition, Pi uses natural language and is incredibly friendly and supportive. What a beautiful piece of technology. ????????
