"I.e." or "e.g."?
- Misusing i.e. and e.g. was one of the most common mistakes I used to see when I was a full-time editor. There's so much confusion that once, I got a third draft back from a client and he had actually crossed out the right abbreviation I had put in and replaced it with the wrong one, I just had the laugh. (chuckles) I.e. and e.g. are both abbreviations for Latin terms. People often use them interchangeably, but they mean different things. E.g. stands for exempli gratia, which means, for example. So you use it to introduce an example. I like small energetic dogs, e.g., terriers and beagles. Because I used e.g. you know that terriers and beagles are examples of the type of dog I like.
