- Almost every week, someone asks me to explain the difference between further and farther. And I can tell from my website analytics that you're all looking up, further verses farther. People use these words a bit more are interchangeably in British English. But in American English, farther is for physical distance and further for metaphorical or figurative distance. It's easy to remember because farther has the word far in it, and far obviously relates to physical distance. If your family is taking a road trip and someone is wondering when you'll get to the next restaurant, they should ask, "How much farther is it."
