"Capital" or "capitol"?

"Capital" or "capitol"?

- Capitol is a tricky word because it has two spellings and many meanings. Fortunately, is not as hard as it initially seems, because the O spelling C-A-P-I-T-O-L has only one use: it's used for buildings. So if you go to Sacramento, De Moines, Austin, Atlanta, Albany, or any other state capitol, the building where the state senators and representatives meet is the capitol building, spelled with an O. I remember that because in my mind, the stereotypical capitol building has a big round dome on top. And I just think of that dome as the letter O. The only tricky part is that you use an uppercase C in the word capitol when you're writing about the whole nation's Capitol building in Washington, DC where Congress meets.
