Installing Active Directory Domain Services
- [Instructor] The process of turning a server into a domain controller is really a two step process. So here, I want to show you the first of these two steps and that would be to install the actual active directory domain services role. So here I will tell you, I am on virtual machine. I have called DC-1, and it is nothing more than a newly installed copy of windows server 2022. And other than some basic configuration like assigning the computer name and IP address and things like that, nothing else has been done to it. So here in the server manager, you'll notice that step number one is configured to local server. I said, we've done that already. Step number two is add roles and features. So I'm going to click on that now. First thing that comes up is a before you begin screen, that basically says, Hey you're about to make this server, doing something important. Before you do that, you want to make sure that it's secure things like having an administrator account with a strong password and that your network settings are appropriately configured and that you have the latest and greatest security updates. Alright? So I'm going to tell you, yes, we're done. I'm not going to worry about this. We'll see this every time we go through this particular wizard, if you don't want to see it you can actually check the box to say skip this page by default. So I'm going to go ahead and click on next. I now have to decide, is this going to be a role or feature installation, or is this going to be a remote desktop services installation used in a virtual desktop infrastructure or VDI? Well, this is just a basic role installation. So I'm going to take the default right up top and click next. Now I need to choose what server I want to install this role on. Now, one of the neat things about server manager is we have the ability to add additional servers that we can manage remotely from this one location. I have not implemented that in my environment but that's why it's asking me to choose a server. If I was managing multiple servers I could choose which ones I want to install on. In this case, I do want to install on this server the one we're on DC-1. So I would click next and now is where we actually choose the role that we want to install. And I had said that the role we're going to install is active directory domain services. The second one on the list here. Now, before I check the box I want to tell you to watch that something's going to happen. Okay. When I check this box, I'll do it now. A little pop up window comes up that basically says that there are other features that are required in order for active directory domain services to be fully installed. Okay. So I can see the list of what they're going to add. And the really cool thing is all I have to do is just simply click this button that says add features and it will add all of those features that are required along with the role rather than me having to worry about going back and doing that manually. So I'm going to go ahead and click add features and that's the only role that I want to install here. So I'm going to go ahead and click on next. Now the next screen we get here is where I can choose any additional features that I want to install at this point. But because I am only trying to install the one role we can just skip right through this screen and click on next. Now it gives me a little bit about what it is that I'm about to do, right? Here's some information about what active directory domain services is. You'll notice there's even a little bit of an ad here for Azure active directory which is an online directory services. So there's information that you can get right here. If you're looking to move away from on premises and move out into the cloud with your active directory services. But this is fine. I'm just going to go ahead and click on next. And then I get my confirmation screen that tells me everything I'm about to do. Now, one of the things that I've learned do just out of habit on this screen is there's a box up at the top that says restart the destination server automatically if required. So I'm going to check that box. And when I do I'll get a little warning that basically says, Hey it's going to happen without any notification. So are you sure you want to do this? Because you know, if there's any other processes running or any other users connected, they're going to be kicked off. So I'm okay with this. I'm going to click yes. And at this point, all I have to do is click install. And now it's going to go through the installation process. You'll see a progress bar go across the top of the screen here. And there's nothing else really we need to do, but wait. I will say that this is a good point for me to explain something that will happen here and throughout the course which is when we have a process like this that can take a few minutes to go through rather than us just sitting here together staring at a bar for a few minutes. I'm going to go ahead and speed up the video to the end. And if you're watching and you're trying to follow along while watching this is a great point where you would go ahead and pause this video and then resume once this process has completed. Alright. So on my machine, we have sped things up and you can see here that the progress bar has completed. And there's a little message that says configuration required. But after that it says installation succeeded on DC-1. That's what we're looking for. Now, the fact that there is a configuration required that is because I told you that technically there's a two step process. Alright. So that was step one. We actually, at this point have installed the role and in the next video, I'll show you the next step.
